The Matchup

  • Loyola women's soccer hits the road for its final two games of the regular season, beginning with a weekend matchup at Patriot League leaders Boston University.
  • The Greyhounds are currently tied with Bucknell for second place in the conference standings. Both schools have 14 points, leaving them two back of the first-place Terriers.

Last Time Out

  • Baylee DeSmit fired a free kick into the top right corner 59 seconds into the second half, and Loyola's defense shutdown Lehigh throughout to pick up a key 1-0 home victory last Saturday.
  • The Greyhounds are now 3-0-1 in their last four games, allowing just one goal during that span, and they improved to 4-0-2 in six lifetime meetings at home against the Mountain Hawks (5-7-1, 3-3-1 PL).
  • DeSmit's curling effort was her third goal of the season, tying her with Ada Clare Tempert for the team lead.
  • Paige Sim made three saves, all in the second half, to secure her sixth clean sheet of the season in goal. Each of Loyola's last three victories, and six of seven overall on the year, have come via shutout.

Playoff Scenarios

  • Loyola can clinch a third-straight appearance in the Patriot League tournament with a win or draw on Saturday. A victory over Boston U would additionally guarantee a top four seed and a home game in the playoffs.
  • The Greyhounds would also clinch a playoff spot with a loss and losses or ties by American (vs. Lehigh), Army West Point (vs. Bucknell) and Colgate (at Lafayette).
  • Loyola is one of two teams to advance to the Patriot League semifinals in each of the last two seasons under head coach Joe Mallia.

Offensive Leaders

  • Loyola has had a variety of offensive contributors throughout the season, with 17 different Greyhounds recording at least one point on the year. 
  • Sarah Mirr (2 G, 3 A) and Baylee DeSmit (3 G, 1 A), are the current top point scorers. Ada Clare Tempert (3 G) follows with six points, while Sarah Bayer and Kelly Hutton have each contributed two goals and an assist.
  • Two of Tempert's three goals have been game winners (Sept. 9 at Howard, Sept. 18 vs. Colgate). DeSmit continues to lead the team with 29 shots (17 SOG).
  • Kaleigh Gallagher (2 G) rounds out a group of six Greyhounds with multiple goals.

Series History

  • Boston U leads 7-1-2 in a series which dates back to 2009.
  • Loyola's lone victory was a 1-0 home triumph on Oct. 18, 2014.
  • The Greyhounds snapped a five-game losing streak in the series during the last meeting on Oct. 5, 2019, when the teams played to a scoreless draw in Boston.
  • Boston U led 12-9 in shots, while Loyola had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Paige Sim made four saves to secure a key road point for the visitors.
  • The Greyhounds have been held off the scoreboard in each of the last four meetings between the two sides. Their last goal against BU came during a 2-1 setback in the 2015 Patriot League semifinals.

Scouting Boston U

  • The Terriers (9-5-2, 5-1-1 PL) are 7-1-1 in their last nine games dating back to a 2-1 victory over New Hampshire on Sept. 12. 
  • Boston U had won five-straight contests, including the last four via shutout, prior to a 2-2 home draw against Bucknell last weekend. The first Bison goal in the game snapped a BU shutout streak of over 427 minutes in the first half. So. M Lily Matthews scored with 2:31 remaining in regulation to secure a point for the Terriers.
  • The lone conference setback for BU was a 1-0 defeat to Colgate on Sept. 22.
  • Sr. F Jenna Oldham (4 G, 7 A) leads the team with 15 points and ranks second in the Patriot League in assists. Oldham is followed by So. F Abigail McNulty (2 G, 4 A) and Sr. F Amy Thompson (4 G).
  • Jr. Gretchen Bennett (5-1-0, 1.25 GAA, .762 save pct.) and Fr. Celia Braun (4-4-2, 1.18 GAA, .722 save pct.) have split time in goal throughout the season. They have posted six combined shutouts.
Quick Notes Entering the Weekend
  • Loyola has earned a result in 16 of 20 regular season games against Patriot League opponents since 2019, going 10-4-6 during that stretch.
  • Six players (Gillian Borton, Chloe Kuminkoski, Sarah Mirr, Nicole Rivas, Alex Searing, Paige Sim) have started each of the first 15 games for the Greyhounds.
  • Sim has held Patriot League opponents to one goal or fewer in 23 of 24 career starts against conference schools.
  • Four Loyola players have combined for seven weekly Patriot League awards this season. Sim is a four-time Goalkeeper of the Week this fall, while Kaleigh Gallagher (Offensive POW), Elizabeth Gallagher (Rookie of the Week) and MK Barnes (Defensive POW) have also been recognized individually.
Recipes for Success
  • The Greyhounds have won each of the last 12 games in which they have scored two goals or more, a streak which dates back to Sept. 6, 2018. Loyola is 4-0-0 when scoring multiple goals this season.
  • The Greyhounds are also 7-0-1 when scoring first and 5-0-1 when leading at halftime this fall. They are 7-0-2 overall in their last nine games when leading at the intermission.

More on Sim

  • Paige Sim has played 1399 out of a possible 1410 minutes this season, and she has totaled 6+ saves in seven of her 15 appearances.
  • For the year, Sim is 7-5-3 with a 0.96 goals-against average, a .815 save percentage and a conference-high six shutouts. Taking away Loyola's defeats to ACC leaders Clemson and Wake Forest, she is 7-3-3 with a 0.59 GAA and .871 save percentage.
  • Sim was a third team All-Patriot League honoree during the 2021 spring season, and she was a second team selection following her freshman season in 2019.
  • For her career, Sim is 16-9-9 with a 0.71 GAA, a .840 save percentage and 14 shutouts in 33 starts.

Worth Noting

  • Nine of 11 primary starters from the spring are back for the Greyhounds this season, including six former All-Patriot League players in Bayer (2018 - 2nd Team, 2019 - 1st Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team) Paige Sim (2019 - 2nd Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team), Ada Clare Tempert (Spring 2021 - 1st Team), Kaleigh Gallagher (2019 - 3rd Team), Julia Gray (2019 - 2nd Team) and Nicole Rivas (Spring 2021 - 3rd Team).
  • Gray, who served as Loyola's co-SAAC president for the 2020-21 academic year, was announced in June as the Patriot League's representative on the NCAA Division I SAAC. She begins her two-year term this fall.
  • Gray, Rivas and Gillian Borton were chosen as team captains for the 2021 season. Borton is a first-year team captain, while Gray and Rivas served as co-captains for the 2020-21 academic year.
  • A second team All-Patriot League honoree in 2019, Gray was also a Preseason All-Patriot League selection in the spring before missing a majority of the season due to injury. She started all 19 games at center back in 2019, anchoring a defense which surrendered just seven goals over the season's final 12 contests.
  • Loyola has two of the last three Maryland Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year honorees on its roster, with Tempert recognized in 2019 and freshman Baylee DeSmit chosen in 2020.
