The Matchup

  • Loyola women's soccer wraps up the regular season with a midweek trip to American on Wednesday, as the Greyhounds look to improve their seeding for the upcoming Patriot League tournament.
  • The Greyhounds are currently third in the conference standings with 15 points. They are two points back of first-place Boston University and one point behind Navy heading into the regular season finale.

Last Time Out

  • Baylee DeSmit opened the scoring in the 30th minute, and several big defensive efforts late in double-overtime helped Loyola pick up a key 1-1 draw at conference-leading Boston U on Saturday.
  • The point secured Loyola's third-straight appearance in the Patriot League tournament, and it prevented the Terriers (9-5-3, 5-1-2 PL) from clinching the No. 1 seed.
  • Loyola's backline came up big late to secure the tie. Nicole Rivas and Jess Korman made back-to-back team saves in the 107th minute, and Paige Sim made a diving stop to her left with 45 seconds remaining to keep Boston U off the scoreboard.
  • DeSmit has scored in consecutive games after providing the game-winner last weekend vs. Lehigh, and she now leads the team with nine points (4 G, 1 A) on the year. She received her first Patriot League Midfielder of the Week award on Monday.

Playoff Scenarios

  • Loyola has guaranteed a top four seed and at least one home game in this year's conference tournament. The Greyhounds can finish anywhere from first through fourth in the standings based on Wednesday's results.
  • The Greyhounds can place no lower than third with a victory. They could rise to No. 2 with a win and a Navy loss/tie vs. Lafayette OR a Boston U loss to Army. They would clinch the No. 1 seed with a win, a Navy loss/tie AND a Boston U loss.
  • A loss would make Loyola the No. 4 seed. The Greyhounds (4-1-3, 15 pts) could finish No. 3 or No. 4 with a draw, depending on the result between current No. 4 seed Bucknell (4-2-2, 14 pts) and current No. 5 seed Lehigh (4-3-1, 13 pts).
  • Loyola is one of two teams to advance to the Patriot League semifinals in each of the last two seasons under head coach Joe Mallia.

Offensive Leaders

  • Loyola has had a variety of offensive contributors throughout the season, with 17 different Greyhounds recording at least one point on the year.
  • Baylee DeSmit (4 G, 1 A) and Sarah Mirr (2 G, 3 A), are the current top point scorers. Ada Clare Tempert (3 G) follows with six points, while Sarah Bayer and Kelly Hutton have each contributed two goals and an assist.
  • Two of Tempert's three goals have been game winners (Sept. 9 at Howard, Sept. 18 vs. Colgate). DeSmit continues to lead the team with 32 shots (20 SOG).
  • Kaleigh Gallagher (2 G) rounds out a group of six Greyhounds with multiple goals.

Series History

  • Loyola leads 11-3-4 in a series which dates back to the program's debut season in 1992.
  • The Greyhounds have a 5-1-2 edge since joining the Patriot League in 2013, with the lone setback a 2-1 defeat to the Eagles on Oct. 18, 2017.
  • Loyola earned a 1-0 road win during the most-recent meeting on April 3 last spring. Sarah Bayer provided the game-winning goal in the 69th minute, tapping the ball over the goal line after Gillian Borton nearly scored direct off her corner kick.
  • The Greyhounds topped American by a 3-1 final in the last meeting at Ridley on Oct. 2, 2019, with Bayer, Hannah Hoefs and an own goal accounting for the offense. Those three goals are the most for Loyola against a Patriot League opponent since Joe Mallia returned as head coach in 2019.

Scouting American

  • The Eagles (5-8-2, 2-4-2 PL) still have a chance to claim the sixth and final spot in this year's Patriot League tournament. They need a win over Loyola, an Army defeat to Boston U and a Lafayette loss or draw at Navy to secure their first playoff appearance since 2015.
  • American is 0-3-1 in its last four conference games, falling to Boston U (1-0), Navy (2-0) and Lehigh (2-1) while earning a 1-1 draw at Colgate.
  • Sr. M Tate Jordan (5 G, 3 A) and Fr. M Brooke Steel (4 G, 1 A) have been the team's primary goal scorers this season, while Jr. M Alysa Vazquez (1 G, 4 A) leads the Eagles in assists.
  • Fr. GK Julia Kato has played every minute in goal for American. She has a 1.49 goals-against average and .744 save percentage, and ranks second in the Patriot League in saves per game (4.47).
Quick Notes Entering Wednesday
  • Loyola has earned a result in 17 of 21 regular season games against Patriot League opponents since 2019, going 10-4-7 during that stretch.
  • Each of Loyola's last three victories, and six of seven overall on the year, have come via shutout.
  • Six players (Gillian Borton, Chloe Kuminkoski, Sarah Mirr, Nicole Rivas, Alex Searing, Paige Sim) have started each of the first 16 games for the Greyhounds.
  • Sim has held Patriot League opponents to one goal or fewer in 24 of 25 career starts against conference schools.
  • Five Loyola players have combined for eight weekly Patriot League awards this season. Sim is a four-time Goalkeeper of the Week this fall, while Baylee DeSmit (Midfielder of the Week), Kaleigh Gallagher (Offensive POW), Elizabeth Gallagher (Rookie of the Week) and MK Barnes (Defensive POW) have also been recognized individually.
Recipes for Success
  • The Greyhounds have won each of the last 12 games in which they have scored two goals or more, a streak which dates back to Sept. 6, 2018. Loyola is 4-0-0 when scoring multiple goals this season.
  • The Greyhounds are also 7-0-2 when scoring first and 5-0-1 when leading at halftime this fall. They are 7-0-2 overall in their last nine games when leading at the intermission.

More on Sim

  • Paige Sim has played 1399 out of a possible 1410 minutes this season, and she has totaled 5+ saves in nine of her 16 appearances. She leads the Patriot League in goals-against average (0.95), save percentage (.816) and shutouts (6) this fall.
  • Sim was a third team All-Patriot League honoree during the 2021 spring season, and she was a second team selection following her freshman season in 2019.
  • For her career, Sim is 16-9-10 with a 0.71 GAA, a .840 save percentage and 14 shutouts in 34 starts.

Worth Noting

  • Sarah Bayer became the program's first three-time All-Patriot League honoree after earning third team accolades last spring, and she is Loyola's active scoring leader with 27 points (11 G, 5 A) in 55 collegiate appearances.
  • Nine of 11 primary starters from the spring are back for the Greyhounds this season, including six former All-Patriot League players in Bayer (2018 - 2nd Team, 2019 - 1st Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team) Paige Sim (2019 - 2nd Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team), Ada Clare Tempert (Spring 2021 - 1st Team), Kaleigh Gallagher (2019 - 3rd Team), Julia Gray (2019 - 2nd Team) and Nicole Rivas (Spring 2021 - 3rd Team).
  • Gray, who served as Loyola's co-SAAC president for the 2020-21 academic year, was announced in June as the Patriot League's representative on the NCAA Division I SAAC. She begins her two-year term this fall.
  • Gray, Rivas and Gillian Borton were chosen as team captains for the 2021 season. Borton is a first-year team captain, while Gray and Rivas served as co-captains for the 2020-21 academic year.
  • A second team All-Patriot League honoree in 2019, Gray was also a Preseason All-Patriot League selection in the spring before missing a majority of the season due to injury. She started all 19 games at center back in 2019, anchoring a defense which surrendered just seven goals over the season's final 12 contests.
  • Loyola has two of the last three Maryland Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year honorees on its roster, with Tempert recognized in 2019 and freshman Baylee DeSmit chosen in 2020.
Looking Ahead
  • Loyola will host either a Patriot League tournament quarterfinal at 2 p.m. on Sunday or a Patriot League semifinal at 7 p.m. next Thursday.
