BALTIMORE –
Jonathan Sousa's first goal of the season was a big one, as he tapped in a cross from
Matthew Lala in the 94th minute to send Loyola University Maryland to a 1-0 victory over Army West Point on Senior Day at Ridley Athletic Complex.
The Greyhounds (8-6-2, 6-2 PL) win their fourth-straight conference game, all via shutout, and take over sole possession of first place in the Patriot League standings with one game remaining in the regular season. Loyola's 18 points are two ahead of both Holy Cross and American heading into Wednesday's finale at Bucknell.
Sousa, who was one of nine Greyhounds recognized pregame, scored his third-career Patriot League game-winner.
Jordy Luchies began the play with a long ball towards Lala on the left side of the box. Lala's cross then eluded Army goalkeeper Jacob Suppiah and found Sousa alone on the goal line.
Shots were even at 3-3 through 45 minutes, but Loyola dominated possession the rest of the way. The home side had a 13-1 advantage in shots and a 4-0 lead in corner kicks during the second half and overtime.
Chase Vosvick made three saves in goal to pick up his seventh solo shutout of the season. He is now 6-2-0 with a 0.53 GAA and .800 save percentage against conference opponents on the year.
The Greyhounds have outscored opponents 9-0 during their current four-game conference winning streak. They also improved to 4-1 in their last five meetings against the Black Knights (7-7-1, 4-4-0 PL).
Loyola's regular season finale at Bucknell is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The Greyhounds can clinch a fourth Patriot League regular season in the last five years with a victory.
