BALTIMORE – Jasmine Talley scored the game-winning goal 1:11 into overtime, sending Army West Point to a 2-1 victory over Loyola University Maryland in Sunday's Patriot League quarterfinal.
The Black Knights (7-8-3) advance to face top-seeded Boston University in the semifinals, while the Greyhounds end their season with an overall record of 8-6-4.
Loyola extended the game beyond regulation on a dramatic late equalizer by
Sarah Mirr in the 87th minute.
Sarah Bayer found
Ada Clare Tempert in the center of the box, and she sent the ball back to Mirr for a shot which eluded goalkeeper Sage Strohman and three Army defenders to level the score.
Mirr's goal was her third of the season and her second against the Black Knights. She ends the year with nine points (3 G, 3 A), tied with
Baylee DeSmit for the team lead.
The Greyhounds controlled play for a majority of a scoreless first half, ending the frame with an 8-2 advantage in shots. DeSmit had the top two chances for the home side, forcing a diving stop out of Strohman in the 19th minute and rattling an effort off the crossbar eight minutes later.
Army had more of the possession out of the break, and Trinity Garay opened the scoring for the visitors with her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 54th minute.
Loyola had four of the game's next five shots before Mirr's equalizer, including attempts from
Elizabeth Gallagher and
Kelly Hutton which both required strong saves from Strohman.
Talley's game-winner came after she gained possession in the box and fired an attempt past goalkeeper
Paige Sim, off a Loyola defender and into the right corner.
The Greyhounds' eight victories this season were the program's most since 2012, and their 18 points (5-1-3) in Patriot League play were their highest since joining the conference in 2013.
