WASHINGTON, D.C. – American University rallied to win the fourth and fifth sets Tuesday night, and the Eagles posted a 22-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 15-7 victory over Loyola University Maryland in the Patriot League Quarterfinals.
The loss ends a season that saw the Greyhounds post their best record since 2007 as they finished 17-11 overall.
Abby Hamilton had 25 kills and 19 digs, while
Lauren Link totaled 19 kills and 20 digs.
The Greyhounds went up by six, 21-15, in the first set on an American attack error, but the Eagles came back to pull within a pair three times late in the set. Hamilton had sideout kills for the Greyhounds to earn their last two points of the set for the early lead.
American led early in the seconds set, but the Greyhounds went ahead 19-18 on a
Katie Forsythe service ace. Two kills by Link gave the Greyhounds leads at 20-19 and 21-20, but the Eagles came back with the next four points.
Adara Kellogg's sideout block pulled Loyola within two, 24-22 before American closed out the set, 25-22.
Loyola held American to a .036 hitting percentage in the third as it went up 2-1 with a 25-18 victory. The momentum quickly swung back to the Eagles' favor in the fourth as they scored eight-straight points to lead 20-11.
Cat Vaccaro's kill tied the score at 4-4 in the fifth set, and
Abby Hamilton sided out with a kill to make it 7-6. American took the serve back with a sideout from Katie Putney, the first of a 5-0 Eagles run to put the match away.
Forsythe finished with a team-high 24 digs, and
Corinne Filograna had 15.
Kacy Sekunda passed out 48 assists and had 17 digs. Kellogg led Loyola with six total blocks.
