TOWSON, Md. – Towson was kept off the scoreboard until the 12:39 mark of the opening half, but that first goal began a 10-0 run which ultimately secured a 13-7 victory for the Tigers over Loyola University Maryland on Wednesday night.
The Greyhounds (0-2) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on strikes from
Holly Lloyd and
Sam Fiedler, but were then held goalless for over 35 minutes of game action during Towson's scoring run.
Nikki Sliwak had four goals and an assist for the Tigers (3-0), and Carly Merlo made 10 stops in goal. Towson led 30-22 in shots and 15-8 in draw controls.
Fiedler recorded her second-straight hat trick to begin the year, while
Catie Corolla supplied two goals and three ground balls off the bench.
Meaghan Quinn set career-highs in both ground balls (4) and caused turnovers (3) to lead the defensive effort.
It was a 6-2 Towson lead at halftime, and the Tigers scored the first four goals out of the break before Corolla ended the drought with 19:31 left in regulation. An
Anna Ruby goal, ripped into the top right corner off a free position, began a 3-0 Loyola run which reduced the deficit to 11-6 with 7:30 left. Sliwak, though, scored the next two goals to put the game out of reach.
Livy Rosenzweig had two assists in the defeat, while Lloyd,
Jillian Wilson and
Sydni Black also set up goals. Black's assist was the first point of her collegiate career.
Towson picked up its first victory in the series since 2017, snapping a three-game winning streak for the Greyhounds.
Loyola is scheduled to return to action next Wednesday, traveling to Villanova for a non-conference matchup beginning at 2 p.m.
