Larsson Leads No. 14 Women’s Lacrosse Past Georgetown; Greyhounds Add Sunday Home Game vs. Drexel

BALTIMORE – Kaitlyn Larsson recorded a career-high 14 saves in goal, and the offense recovered from a slow start to send No. 14 Loyola University Maryland to a hard-fought 9-6 home win over Georgetown on Wednesday.

Larsson made 10 of her stops in the first half, keeping the Greyhounds (3-2) in the game as they were kept off the scoreboard until 5:39 prior to the intermission. Loyola outscored the Hoyas (1-2) by a 6-2 margin in the second half after trailing by one at the break.

Sam Fiedler led the offense with a pair of goals, including the game-winning tally with 12:44 remaining, and a career-best four assists. Livy Rosenzweig (6) and Jillian Wilson (4) combined for 10 draw controls, as the Greyhounds kept control of the possession with a 12-5 edge in draws overall.

Georgetown controlled play for a majority of the first half, with the visitors holding a 3-0 advantage 24 minutes into the contest. Rosenzweig set up Caitlyn Gunn for Loyola's opening goal, and two strikes 30 seconds apart from Emily Beier and Fiedler leveled up the score with 2:09 on the clock.

The Hoyas entered halftime with a lead after Natalia Lynch scored with 13 seconds remaining. The teams traded goals over the first 10 minutes of the second half, with an Emily Wills strike cancelled out by Georgetown's Katie Goldsmith.

Back-to-back goals from Anna Ruby and Elli Kluegel gave the Greyhounds their first lead of the night with 18:06 left. After Lynch scored the last of her game-high four goals, Fiedler put Loyola ahead for good, with Rosenzweig and Kluegel providing insurance markers in the closing minutes.

Larsson's previous career-high saves total was 12, a mark which she reached twice last season. She has now allowed single-digit goals in three-consecutive games, all Greyhound victories. She also picked up a career-best four ground balls.

Wills finished with a career-high three caused turnovers to go along with a goal and an assist. Sydney Foster assisted on Ruby's strike for her first point of the season, while Beier now has goals in three-straight outings.

Outside of last year, in which the matchup was cancelled due to COVID-19, the two teams have met in every season dating back to 2006. This was the 14-straight game between the sides which was decided by four goals or fewer.

Loyola's originally scheduled weekend game at Navy has been postponed due to restriction of movement at the Naval Academy. The Greyhounds have added a home game against Drexel as a replacement, scheduled for 12 p.m. Sunday at Ridley Athletic Complex. The schedule remains subject to change should a Patriot League opponent become available. Check LoyolaGreyhounds.com for the latest updates.
