Tigers Top Men’s Lacrosse In Low-Scoring Overtime Affair

TOWSON, Md. – Towson University's Tim Montgomery scored off the right wing 2:41 into overtime, lifting the Tigers to a 7-6 non-conference victory over visiting Loyola University Maryland on Saturday at Unitas Stadium.

Montgomery's goal was his third of the game and came after Loyola had tied the game with 3:08 left in regulation.

The game saw Towson hold a 38-34 advantage in shots, but the teams combined for 29 turnovers and eight penalties.

Bailey Savio, who went 12 of 16 on faceoffs with six ground balls for the Greyhounds, knotted the game at 6-6 with 3:08, scoring the goal that would eventually send the teams to overtime. Montgomery had given the Tigers their first lead seven seconds before, but Savio won the faceoff going forward, picked up the ground ball cleanly and tallied his first goal of the season.

Savio's goal stopped a 4-0 Towson run that saw it come from 5-2 down midway through the third quarter.

Loyola took a 4-2 lead into halftime, and Joey Kamish scored the second half's first goal at 8:52 in the third when he ran out of the box, split his defender and got to his left hand for his second goal of the game.

Riley Gaeger responded for Towson with a goal 1:59 later, making it a two-goal margin.

Andrew Beacham grabbed a ground ball off a Towson shot that hit the post and scored 1:50 into the fourth quarter, bringing the Tigers within a goal.

Towson scored again with 4:45 left in the frame on another broken play. The Greyhounds knocked down a pass, but the ball found its way to James Avanzato who scored on the doorstep to tie the game for the first time.

Loyola took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of Aidan Olmstead goals, the first when he was hung up behind the crease and ran topside to score and the second on extra man with 7:35 left in the quarter.

Montgomery got his first on extra-man with 17 ticks left in the stanza, but Kamish got Loyola back up a pair 14 seconds later with his first of the day.

Jake McLean had an unassisted goal for Towson at 12:42 in the second quarter, and Swindell used a Seth Higgins feed to score at 6:29, closing out the first half scoring with Loyola in front.

Loyola returns to Patriot League action on Saturday, April 3, when it makes a trip to Annapolis, Maryland to face the U.S. Naval Academy.
