Quick Hits About the 'Hounds

  • Loyola men's soccer hits the road for the first time this spring, traveling to American for a 3:30 p.m. matchup on Saturday.
  • The Eagles will be playing for the first time since topping Loyola by a 2-1 final in overtime on March 20. Saturday's game will not count towards the Patriot League South division standings.
  • The Greyhounds are in a four-way tie for second place in the South division with three points. American currently tops the standings with six points.
  • Loyola has gone 22-6-1 against conference opponents since 2017, winning 34 games overall during that span.
  • Justin Ingram, Jonathan Sousa and Chase Vosvick all earned Preseason All-Patriot League accolades this spring, while Vosvick was also selected to the Hermann Trophy Watch List.
  • Loyola was ranked third out of 10 schools in the Patriot League preseason poll, with the Greyhounds receiving 124 points and one first-place vote.

Last Time Out

  • Loc San's first collegiate game was a memorable one, as he scored the game-winning goal 2:28 into double overtime to help Loyola knock off defending Patriot League champions Lehigh by a 2-1 final last Saturday.
  • Sam Brown and Kelan Swales assisted on the winning strike for the Greyhounds, while Justin Ingram opened the scoring for the home side on a direct corner kick at the 22:18 mark of the first half
  • Shots were deadlocked at 5-5 heading into the intermission, but Loyola had a 12-6 edge over the remainder of the contest.
  • Chase Vosvick came up with a pair of big saves during the final 20 minutes of the second half to help send the game into extra time.
  • Loyola avenged a 1-0 setback to the Mountain Hawks during the 2019 regular season.

Series History

  • Loyola leads 27-16-5 in a series which dates back to 1949.
  • The Greyhounds have a 5-3 advantage since joining the Patriot League in 2013, but American snapped a four-game losing streak with its 2-1, OT triumph earlier this spring.
  • Kyle Hellmann leveled up the score with 76 seconds remaining in regulation, and he provided the game-winner 5:35 into overtime for the Eagles.
  • Sam Brown had the lone goal for Loyola in the 40th minute. The Greyhounds led 15-0 in shots through 70 minutes, but were outshot 6-0 the rest of the way.
  • Jordan Wiley scored the only goal in the 44th minute during Loyola's 1-0 win back in 2019. The Greyhounds outshot the Eagles 13-3 and allowed just a single shot on goal.

About the Eagles

  • American owns victories over both Lehigh (2-0, March 6) and Loyola this spring, while its lone setback was a 2-1 loss at Bucknell on March 13.
  • Fr. M Jason Bouregy and Sr. F Nick Dimitrijevic provided the goals in the Eagles' season-opening win over Lehigh. Bouregy also had the assist on Hellman's 89th minute equalizer vs. Loyola on March 20.
  • The Eagles were ranked ninth out of 10 schools in the PL Preseason poll after finishing the 2019 season with an overall record of 3-11-2 (3-5-1 PL). American began last year 0-7-2, and was outscored 19-3 during that stretch, but went 3-4 over its final seven contests.
San Earns Patriot League Weekly Honor
  • Loc San was selected as the Patriot League's Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday following his double overtime winner over the weekend.
  • San had three shots overall across 55 minutes of game action in his collegiate debut. He becomes Loyola's first weekly award winner for the 2021 spring season.
  • Justin Ingram was included among those receiving honorable mention accolades. Ingram scored directly off his own corner kick in the 23rd minute, curling his shot from the left side straight into the top right corner for his fourth goal at Loyola.
Quick Notes
  • Steve Nichols, a 1992 Loyola alum, returns for his seventh season as head coach of Loyola's men's soccer program. Nichols has posted four-straight winning seasons, coaching 11 Patriot League major award winners, 15 All-Region honorees and a pair of All-Americans during that span.
  • A three-time first team All-Region goalkeeper, Chase Vosvick has a 30-17-4 record with 19 shutouts, a .720 save percentage and a 1.05 GAA across 52 appearances.
  • Justin Ingram (3 G, 5 A) and Jonathan Sousa (2 G, 3 A) are Loyola's top returning scorers from 2019.
  • Loyola went 8-1-2 over its final 11 games in 2019, posting a third-consecutive season with 10+ victories with a final mark of 10-7-2 (7-2 PL). Included in the late season run was a 1-1 draw at #2 Wake Forest, a team which ultimately advanced to the Final Four.
  • Josh Fawole (2nd round, DC United) and Barry Sharifi (3rd round, NY Red Bulls) became Loyola's first MLS SuperDraft selections since 2009 last season.
Patriot League Tournament Format
  • The Patriot League is split into two five-team divisions this spring, with Loyola grouped in the South with American, Bucknell, Lehigh and Navy.
  • The top two teams in each division advance to the PL tournament, with semifinal games set for April 13 and the championship scheduled for April 17.
  • Division seeding will be determined based on points earned against division opponents (three points for a win, one for a tie). Only the first game played against a division opponent counts towards the team standings.
  • Tiebreaker information is available on the Patriot League website.
  • Each division winner will host the second-place team within its division in the semifinal round. The remaining team with the highest regular-season point total will host the championship game.
