Men's Soccer Rallies To Tie, But American Comes Away With 3-2 Win In Patriot League Semis

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to tie the game in the 73rd minute on a David Gunter goal, but American University scored the eventual game-winner less than 10 minutes later and went on to a 3-2 victory in the Patriot League Semifinals during a steady rain at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Kelan Swales brought through the middle and slotted a pass to Gunter on the left side of the six, and Gunter finished to equalize the score at 2-2 with just over 17 minutes remaining in regulation.

The Eagles (3-1-2 overall), however, capitalized on a long pass by Alameen Salako that Kyle Hellmann flicked on to David Coly.

Coly was past his defender, and he beat Loyola goalkeeper Thomas Zinngrebe one-on-one to score at 81:48.

Loyola had a good chance to even the score in the 87th minute when Swales struck a shot from 30 yards out on the left sideline that curled to the far post where it was saved by American's Lorenzo Gordon just before it went over the line.

American scored twice in the first 39 minutes against a Loyola defense that was missing three starters, including Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year Chase Vosvick.

Viggo Sjoberg switched the field with a pass from the far left to the right side where Jason Bouregy dribbled in to the corner of the six. He slid a pass across the face of the goal to Jerry Zouantcha, and he scored in the 34th minute for the match's first goal.

The Eagles made it 2-0 in the 39th minute when Sjoberg sent a corner kick in front of the goal where Nicolas Biassou finished high into the right side of the goal.

The Greyhounds had a 5-2 advantage in shots, and they continued to press offensively early in the second half.

Loc San got a step on his defender inside the 18, and he was fouled by Biassou, drawing a yellow card and a penalty kick opportunity for Loyola. Justin Ingram converted the attempt, and the Greyhounds were within a goal at 50:59 before Gunter's game-tying goal.

Loyola (3-2-1) had more offensive pressure that amounted in a 14-6 lead in shots and an 8-5 spread in corner kicks.

The Greyhounds had their best first-half chances in the 23rd minute when Danilo Seglio shot from the left post to the far side of the goal only to see American's Will Giannakouros clear the ball off the line and save a goal. The rebound of Seglio's shot came out to Matthew Lala who sent a shot toward the right post, but Eagles goalkeeper Jake Agnew was there to turn it away and preserve the 0-0 score.
