Quick Hits About the 'Hounds

  • Loyola men's soccer has two key division games on the schedule to conclude the regular season this week, beginning with a Wednesday night matchup at Navy.
  • The Greyhounds (1-1, 3 pts) are three points back of American (2-1) and Navy (2-0) in the South division standings, with the top two teams qualifying for this year's Patriot League tournament.
  • American and Navy will face each other in Washington, D.C. on Saturday to conclude the regular season, while Loyola will take on Bucknell (1-2 South, 3 pts).
  • Loyola has gone 22-6-2 against conference opponents since 2017, winning 34 games overall during that span.
  • Justin Ingram, Jonathan Sousa and Chase Vosvick all earned Preseason All-Patriot League accolades this spring, while Vosvick was also selected to the Hermann Trophy Watch List.

Last Time Out

  • Sam Brown's second goal of the spring cancelled out an early eighth minute strike from American, as Loyola and the host Eagles finished in a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
  • The game did not count towards the South division standings, as it was the second meeting between the two sides.
  • Loc San and Kelan Swales assisted on Brown's goal, which came 28:52 into the first half.
  • Loyola had a commanding 19-4 advantage in shots, including an 8-0 margin in the second half, but the margin was just 4-1 for shots on target. The Greyhounds also earned eight of the game's nine corner kicks.
  • Brown had a game-high five shots, while Swales followed with four and Jonathan Sousa had three.
  • Loyola has now gone to overtime in each of its first three games this spring.

Series History

  • Navy has a slim 5-4-2 advantage in a series which dates back to 1979. The series is deadlocked at 3-3-1 since Loyola joined the Patriot League prior to the 2013 season.
  • The Mids earned a 2-0 victory at Ridley on Sept. 28, 2019 to snap a three-game losing streak to Loyola.
  • Navy prevailed despite trailing 21-4 in shot attempts and 12-1 in corners, with Ian Bramblett making three saves and Navy defenders recording two team saves to secure the clean sheet.
  • Sam Brown was one of four goal scorers for Loyola during a 4-1 Greyhounds victory in Annapolis on Sept. 29, 2018.

About the Midshipmen

  • Navy is coming off a 2-0 victory at defending Patriot League champions Lehigh on Saturday. Second-half goals from Toni Adewole and Nicko West were enough to eliminate the Mountain Hawks (1-3 PL, 1-3 South) from postseason contention.
  • The Mids topped Colgate by a 2-1 final to begin the spring on Feb. 28, and they edged Bucknell by a 1-0 margin in their South division opener on March 27.
  • Navy was second out of 10 schools in this year's Patriot League preseason poll after finishing 2019 with an overall record of 12-4-1 (5-3-1 PL). Navy went 1-4 over its final five games last season, including a 2-0 upset defeat to sixth-seeded Bucknell in the Patriot League quarterfinals.
Brown Earns First Patriot League Midfielder of the Week Award
  • Sam Brown was chosen as the Patriot League's Midfielder of the Week on Tuesday after providing the equalizing goal in Loyola's 1-1 draw at American over the weekend.
  • Brown earns his second-career weekly award after previously taking home Rookie of the Week accolades in 2017.
  • A Second Team All-Patriot League honoree in 2018, he has eight goals and seven assists overall in his collegiate career.
Quick Notes
  • Sam Brown (2 G, 1 A) and Kelan Swales (3 A) have both factored in three of Loyola's four goals this season.
  • A three-time first team All-Region goalkeeper, Chase Vosvick has a 30-17-5 record with 19 shutouts, a .716 save percentage and a 1.05 GAA across 53 appearances.
  • Loc San was named the Patriot League's Offensive POW last Tuesday after scoring the double-overtime winner for Loyola on March 27 in his first collegiate appearance.
  • Justin Ingram (3 G, 5 A) and Jonathan Sousa (2 G, 3 A) are Loyola's top returning scorers from 2019. Ingram opened the scoring in Loyola's win over Lehigh, directing his own corner kick into the top right corner.
  • Loyola went 8-1-2 over its final 11 games in 2019, posting a third-consecutive season with 10+ victories with a final mark of 10-7-2 (7-2 PL). Included in the late season run was a 1-1 draw at #2 Wake Forest, a team which ultimately advanced to the Final Four.
  • Josh Fawole (2nd round, DC United) and Barry Sharifi (3rd round, NY Red Bulls) became Loyola's first MLS SuperDraft selections since 2009 last season.
Patriot League Tournament Format
  • The Patriot League is split into two five-team divisions this spring, with Loyola grouped in the South with American, Bucknell, Lehigh and Navy.
  • The top two teams in each division advance to the PL tournament, with semifinal games set for April 13 and the championship scheduled for April 17.
  • Division seeding will be determined based on points earned against division opponents (three points for a win, one for a tie). Only the first game played against a division opponent counts towards the team standings.
  • Tiebreaker information is available on the Patriot League website.
  • Each division winner will host the second-place team within its division in the semifinal round. The remaining team with the highest regular-season point total will host the championship game.
