The Matchup

  • Loyola women's soccer hits the road for the first time this season on Sunday, as the Greyhounds take on No. 7 Clemson for the first meeting between the two sides since 1995.
  • This is the second of eight games against non-conference opponents prior to Loyola's Patriot League opener against Colgate on Saturday, Sept. 18.

Last Time Out

  • Kelly Hutton scored her first collegiate goal in the 58th minute, and Paige Sim made multiple highlight-reel saves in the closing stages of the second half to lift Loyola to a 1-0 victory over Marist in the season opener for both teams on Thursday.
  • Grace DenBleyker and Sarah Mirr assisted on Hutton's strike for the Greyhounds, while Sim made diving stops in both the 82nd and 89th minutes to secure her ninth clean sheet in 19 collegiate starts.
  • The Greyhounds improved to 14-6-4 lifetime against their former MAAC rivals, and they avenged a 2-1 defeat to Marist during the 2019 regular season.
  • Loyola finished with an 8-6 edge in corner kicks, while Marist had an 18-11 advantage in shots.

Quick Notes from Marist

  • With the 1-0 victory, head coach Joe Mallia is now 98-54-15 across 10 seasons at Loyola (1998-2004, 2019-pres.) and 148-88-26 in 15 seasons overall.
  • Six Greyhounds (Baylee DeSmit, Elizabeth Gallagher, Grace DenBleyker, Alli Jacobson, Jess Korman and Olivia Quaranta) all made their collegiate debuts, with DeSmit and Gallagher both cracking the starting lineup.
  • Sarah Mirr's assist on the game-winning goal was the second of her collegiate career and first since Sept. 6, 2018.
  • Sophomore Chloe Kuminkoski made her first collegiate start for the Greyhounds.
  • Loyola and its opponent were scoreless at the half for a seventh-consecutive game dating back to the 2019 Patriot League semifinals.

Series History

  • Clemson has won the only two previous matchups between the schools, earning a 5-1 home victory in 1994 and a 3-0 neutral site win (played at the University of Maryland) the following year.
  • Loyola's last matchup against an ACC school was a 6-0 setback to Duke in the first round of the 2012 NCAA tournament.
  • The program's last victory over an ACC member was a 2-1 triumph over Wake Forest on Sept. 7, 2007.

Scouting Clemson

  • The Tigers earned their No. 7 preseason United Soccer Coaches ranking after advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals last spring, ending the 2020-21 campaign with an overall record of 12-5-2 (5-3 ACC).
  • Clemson advanced past Rutgers and No. 3 UCLA on penalty kicks before falling 1-0 to No. 11 Santa Clara in the Elite Eight.
  • Sr. GK Hensley Hancuff and So. M Megan Bornkamp were both selected to the Preseason All-ACC Team. Bornkam earned third team All-America recognition in her debut season after leading the team with eight goals scored.
  • Both Bornkamp (2 G, 1 A) and So. D Makenna Morris (2 G, 1 A) recorded five points in Clemson's 8-0 season-opening win over St. Francis (Pa.) on Thursday. The Tigers outshot the Red Flash by a final margin of 32-4.

Sim, Tempert Land on Preseason All-Patriot League Team

  • Loyola was one of three Patriot League schools to have multiple selections to the conference's 11-member Preseason All-League team last week, with juniors Paige Sim and Ada Clare Tempert both earning recognition.
  • Sim played every minute in goal during the spring 2021 season while earning third team all-conference accolades, finishing with a 3-2-1 record, a 0.48 GAA, a .824 save percentage and three shutouts.
  • Also a second team All-Patriot League honoree as a freshman in 2019, Sim has allowed one goal or fewer in each of her first 21 collegiate appearances. She has a career record of 10-4-6 with a 0.50 GAA and .875 save percentage.
  • Tempert scored two of Loyola's four goals in the spring, providing the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Bucknell on March 13 and opening the scoring in an eventual 2-1 win vs. Colgate to begin the season on March 8. A first team All-Patriot League performer, she was tied for the team lead in shots (10), making an immediate impact after missing the 2019 season due to injury.

Loyola Ranked No. 5 in Patriot League Preseason Poll

  • The Greyhounds, who are one of two teams to advance to the Patriot League semifinals in each of the last two seasons, were projected to finish fifth in the conference's preseason poll released on August 10.
  • Loyola has earned a result in 10 of 13 regular season games against Patriot League opponents over the last two years, going 5-3-5 during that stretch.
  • Nine of 11 starters from the spring will be back for the Greyhounds this season, including six former All-Patriot League players in Sim, Tempert, Sarah Bayer (2018 - 2nd Team, 2019 - 1st Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team), Kaleigh Gallagher (2019 - 3rd Team), Julia Gray (2019 - 2nd Team) and Nicole Rivas (Spring 2021 - 3rd Team).

Last Season

  • A season unlike any other culminated in a return trip to the Patriot League Final Four for Loyola, as the Greyhounds went 3-1-1 in regular season play to clinch the No. 2 seed in the conference's South division standings.
  • Loyola's season ultimately ended with a tight 1-0 defeat to eventual conference champions Navy in the semifinals.
  • The Greyhounds outscored their opponents by an overall margin of 4-3 during the shortened spring campaign.
  • Claire Beath, a first team All-Patriot League selection in her final collegiate season on the backline, was the lone field player to play in all 564 minutes.
  • Loyola's team GAA of 0.479 ranked third in the Patriot League and 11th overall among Division I schools.
Borton, Gray, Rivas Named Team Captains
  • Loyola's three team captains for the 2021 fall season were selected earlier this week, with senior Gillian Borton and graduate students Julia Gray and Nicole Rivas chosen to lead the Greyhounds on and off the field.
  • Borton is a first-year team captain, while Gray and Rivas served as co-captains for the 2020-21 academic year.
  • Borton has earned starts in each of her last 20 appearances with the Greyhounds. A contributor on both sides of the field, she had the primary assist on Sarah Bayer's game-winner in a key 1-0 win at American last April.
  • A second team All-Patriot League honoree in 2019, Gray was also a Preseason All-Patriot League selection in the spring before missing a majority of the season due to injury. She started all 19 games at center back in 2019, anchoring a defense which surrendered just seven goals over the season's final 12 contests.
  • Rivas was recognized as an All-Patriot League performer for the first time in her career last spring, landing on the third team after appearing in all six games on the backline, playing a key role for a defense which posted three shutouts. She was recognized as the program's Most Dedicated Player during the athletic department's 2021 Virtual Iggys ceremony.
Back-to-Back-to-Back PL Accolades for Bayer
  • Sarah Bayer became the program's first three-time All-Patriot League honoree after earning third team accolades last spring, and she is Loyola's active scoring leader with 22 points (9 G, 4 A) in 43 collegiate appearances.
  • Bayer is the lone Loyola player to start every game in each of the last three-plus seasons. Of her nine collegiate goals, five have been game-winners for the Greyhounds.
