WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Loyola University Maryland volleyball team had 12 kills without an error on only 19 swings, hitting .632 in the second set Friday evening against George Washington en route to a 25-22, 25-7, 25-16 victory on the Colonials home floor in Dig The District.
While the Greyhounds were strong offensively, George Washington scuffled on its side of the net, registering only six kills with a -.042 hitting mark in the second. Overall, the Greyhounds hit .270 to the Colonials .029.
George Washington (0-6 overall) had an early advantage in the first set that was then tied 9-9 on a Liv Womble kill for the Colonials, but Loyola (6-3) went on a 7-0 run keyed by two of
Megan Bukala's five service aces to break open a 16-9 lead.
Loyola took a 4-0 lead in the second and was up 12-2 before going ahead by 14, 18-4 on a Bukala kill. The third set was not much closer as Loyola used a 6-1 run to break a 3-3 stalemate and turn it into a 9-4 lead.
Abby Hamilton led Loyola with 12 kills, while
Adara Kellogg had eight to go with five total blocks.
Cecylia Guye hit .500 with nine kills and only one error on 16 swings, and Bukala had seven kills to go with 11 digs.
Kacy Sekunda dished out 33 assists, and
Katie Forsythe had 21 digs, while Hamilton added 12.
The Greyhounds close the tournament on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Georgetown University to face the Hoyas in a 1 o'clock contest.
