The Matchup

  • A new season begins for Loyola women's soccer on Saturday, as the Greyhounds host Colgate in the Patriot League opener for both sides.

Last Time Out

  • Damali Simon-Ponte scored the lone goal 3:57 into overtime, as Loyola ended the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 1-0 defeat to Delaware at Ridley Athletic Complex last Sunday.
  • The Greyhounds suffered their first home defeat of the season. Baylee DeSmit and Sarah Bayer led Loyola's offensive effort with two shots apiece.
  • The last of Bayer's shots was among the top scoring chances for the home side, as her curling effort was tipped away by Delaware's GK with 6:30 left in regulation.
  • Simon-Ponte's game-winner was an unstoppable shot into the top left corner from just outside the box for the Blue Hens (3-5-0).
  • Shots overall were 13-7 in favor of Delaware, while both sides earned five corners.

Sim, Barnes Earn Patriot League Awards

  • Paige Sim (Goalkeeper of the Week) and MK Barnes (Defensive Player of the Week) received weekly awards from the Patriot League on Monday. Both contributed to a defensive effort which resulted in a 2-0 shutout victory at Howard last Thursday and kept Delaware off the scoreboard for over 90 minutes on Sunday.
  • Sim made six saves at Howard while registering her third shutout of the season. She then extended her scoreless streak to a career-long 326+ minutes prior to Delaware's OT winner over the weekend.
  • A second team All-Patriot League selection as a freshman in 2019 and a third team honoree last spring, Sim is 12-8-7 in her career with a 0.72 GAA, a .840 save percentage and 11 shutouts in 26 collegiate starts.
  • Barnes played all 90 minutes on the backline at Howard, preserving the clean sheet after recording a team save with 4:19 remaining in regulation. She also picked up her first assist at Loyola in the first half, helping set up Ada Clare Tempert's game-winning goal in the 11th minute.

Series History

  • Colgate leads 6-2-1 in a series which dates back to 2013.
  • Loyola earned its first win over the Raiders since 2015 last spring, as an 88th minute own goal clinched a 2-1 victory at Ridley on March 8.
  • Ada Clare Tempert added her first collegiate goal in the 54th minute, and it was her cross which was directed in by a Colgate defender in the closing minutes of regulation.
  • Colgate edged out a 1-0 double-overtime victory at Ridley during the 2019 season, as Lexi Mitchell headed in a corner with 2:33 left in extra time. Loyola GK Paige Sim made a season-high eight saves in that setback.

Scouting Colgate

  • The Raiders (4-3-0) have the top non-conference record among Patriot League schools, ranking slightly above Navy (4-3-1) and Army (3-3-1).
  • So. GK Emma Hickey (3-2-0, 1.091 GAA, .684 save pct.) leads the conference in goals-against average.
  • Three players have accounted for Colgate's nine goals on the year, with Sr. M Hannah Pinkus (3 G, 2 A), Sr. D Ruby Diodati (3 G, 2 A) and So. F Ally Giovino (3 G) leading the offensive attack.
  • Diodati, a second team All-Region performer last spring and the Patriot League's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, was joined by Pinkus, Sr. F Adrienne Vaughn and So. D Lyna Schaffer on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.
  • Diodati is 3 for 3 on PK attempts during Colgate's last two games, scoring twice in a 3-2 win over Binghamton and providing the lone goal in a 2-1 OT setback at Villanova last Sunday.
Strong D at Home
  • Loyola has held opponents to one goal or fewer in 13-straight home games dating back to Sept. 13, 2019.
  • The Greyhounds have surrendered just two goals in 383 minutes of game action at Ridley Athletic Complex this season.
  • Loyola has not surrendered a first-half goal at Ridley since Oct. 19, 2019 vs. Lafayette, with opponents scoreless at halftime in each of the last nine home games.

Early Offensive Leaders

  • Baylee DeSmit and Ada Clare Tempert each recorded their second goals of the season last Thursday at Howard. Their four points apiece are tied with Sarah Mirr (1 G, 2 A) for the team lead through eight games.
  • Eleven different Greyhounds have at least one point on the year, while Loyola has had six different goal scorers.
  • DeSmit has 19 shots in her first seven collegiate games, 11 more than any other Greyhound.
  • Kelly Hutton scored the lone goal in Loyola's season-opening 1-0 win over Marist (8/19), and Olivia Quaranta's first collegiate strike was the game-winner in a 5-1 home victory over Iona (8/29).

Loyola Ranked No. 5 in Patriot League Preseason Poll

  • The Greyhounds, who are one of two teams to advance to the Patriot League semifinals in each of the last two seasons, were projected to finish fifth in the conference's preseason poll released on August 10. They were also one of three schools to have multiple selections to the 11-member Preseason All-League team, with juniors Paige Sim and Ada Clare Tempert both earning recognition.
  • Loyola has earned a result in 10 of 13 regular season games against Patriot League opponents over the last two years, going 5-3-5 during that stretch.
  • Nine of 11 primary starters from the spring are back for the Greyhounds this season, including six former All-Patriot League players in Sim (2019 - 2nt Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team), Tempert (Spring 2021 - 1st Team), Sarah Bayer (2018 - 2nd Team, 2019 - 1st Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team), Kaleigh Gallagher (2019 - 3rd Team), Julia Gray (2019 - 2nd Team) and Nicole Rivas (Spring 2021 - 3rd Team).

Last Season

  • A season unlike any other culminated in a return trip to the Patriot League Final Four for Loyola, as the Greyhounds went 3-1-1 in regular season play to clinch the No. 2 seed in the conference's South division standings.
  • Loyola's season ultimately ended with a tight 1-0 defeat to eventual conference champions Navy in the semifinals.
  • The Greyhounds outscored their opponents by an overall margin of 4-3 during the shortened spring campaign.
  • Claire Beath, a first team All-Patriot League selection in her final collegiate season on the backline, was the lone field player to play in all 564 minutes.
  • Loyola's team GAA of 0.479 ranked third in the Patriot League and 11th overall among Division I schools.
More Quick Notes
  • Julia Gray, who served as Loyola's co-SAAC president for the 2020-21 academic year, was announced in June as the Patriot League's representative on the NCAA Division I SAAC. She begins her two-year term this fall.
  • Gray, Nicole Rivas and Gillian Borton were chosen as team captains for the 2021 season. Borton is a first-year team captain, while Gray and Rivas served as co-captains for the 2020-21 academic year.
  • A second team All-Patriot League honoree in 2019, Gray was also a Preseason All-Patriot League selection in the spring before missing a majority of the season due to injury. She started all 19 games at center back in 2019, anchoring a defense which surrendered just seven goals over the season's final 12 contests.
  • Loyola has two of the last three Maryland Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year honorees on its roster, with Ada Clare Tempert recognized in 2019 and freshman Baylee DeSmit chosen in 2020.
Smart Hounds
  • Loyola finished the 2021 spring semester with an impressive 3.604 team GPA. A total of 17 Greyhounds recorded a semester GPA above 3.60, with Gillian Borton, Kaleigh Gallagher, Julia Gray, Chloe Kuminkoski, Sarah Mirr and Jenna Nall all posting perfect 4.0 GPA's.
  • Sarah Bayer (biology/speech pathology interdisciplinary major, 3.95 GPA) and Paige Sim (biology major, 3.94 GPA) were both Academic All-Patriot League selections, with Bayer later becoming the program's first CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree since 2012.
Looking Ahead
  • Loyola concludes a three-game home stretch on Wednesday, hosting two-time defending Patriot League champions Navy at 7 p.m.
