Box Score BETHLEHEM, Pa. –
Kelan Swales scored his first goal at Loyola University Maryland in the 53rd minute, helping the Greyhounds complete a rally from an early deficit at Lehigh and secure a 2-1 win in the Patriot League opener for both sides on Saturday.
Swales took a cross from
Kevin Medrano and beat Noah Sutherland in goal 7:20 into the second half, as Loyola (2-2-2, 1-0-0 PL) earned its first-ever road victory over the Mountain Hawks (0-5-1, 0-1-0).
Justin Ingram had the secondary assist on the game-winner, and he converted from the penalty spot in the 17th minute to open the scoring for the visitors.
Sean Graham also played a key role in the first half, drawing the foul which led to Ingram's PK and making a pair of team saves to keep Lehigh off the scoreboard less than a minute prior to the intermission.
The Mountain Hawks struck first less than three minutes into the contest, as Dominic Flowers took advantage of a giveaway in the defensive end and beat Loyola's
Chase Vosvick on the ensuing breakaway.
The two teams had split the first eight meetings in the series, with the home team coming out on top in every game. This was the eighth matchup out of nine that was decided by a single goal.
Swales, who led the Patriot League in assists per game during the shortened spring 2021 season, now has seven points (1 G, 5 A) in his first 12 games at Loyola. Ingram, meanwhile, recorded his sixth game with 3+ points at Loyola.
Medrano made it three-consecutive games with an assist after setting up Swales on a cross from the left side. He also had the primary helper in Loyola's late tying goal at Penn last Monday.
Returning to the starting lineup after missing the last two games due to injury, Vosvick finished the night with three saves in goal, including a key sliding stop on a potential tying effort from Flowers with 5:22 remaining.
The Greyhounds improved to 31-11-5 against Patriot League opponents in the last five-plus seasons under head coach
Steve Nichols. They will be back at Ridley Athletic Complex for the first time since August 29 next weekend, hosting Holy Cross in a conference matchup beginning at 12 p.m.
