The Matchup

  • Loyola women's soccer closes out a stretch of three-straight games at Ridley Athletic Complex on Wednesday, hosting two-time defending Patriot League champions Navy.
  • The Greyhounds, who were eliminated in the Patriot League semifinals by the Midshipmen in each of the past two conference tournaments, are looking for their first victory over Navy since 2016.

Last Time Out

  • Ada Clare Tempert directed in a cross 1:51 into overtime, as Loyola kicked off the Patriot League portion of its schedule with a 2-1 victory over Colgate on Saturday.
  • Jess Korman and Baylee DeSmit assisted on Tempert's game-winner for the Greyhounds, who topped the Raiders (4-4-0, 0-1-0 PL) for a second-straight season.
  • Kaleigh Gallagher's first goal of the fall opened the scoring for the home side late in the first half, with Kelly Hutton and Alex Searing assisting on the play.
  • Both Korman and Searing recorded their first collegiate points in the victory.
  • Adrienne Vaughn equalized for Colgate in the 57th minute, firing a long-distance effort into the top left corner.
  • The teams were even in both shots (10-10) and corner kicks (4-4) on the afternoon.

Sim Repeats as Patriot League's Goalkeeper of the Week

  • Paige Sim was announced as the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week for a second-consecutive Monday. She picks up her sixth-career weekly award from the conference overall (5x Goalkeeper of the Week, 1x Rookie of the Week).
  • Sim is recognized after making three saves, all in the second half, during Loyola's victory over Colgate. She has now held opponents to one goal or fewer in each of her 18 career starts against Patriot League schools.
  • For the year, Sim is now 4-4-1 with a 1.21 goals-against average, a .792 save percentage and three shutouts. In five games at Ridley Athletic Complex, she is 3-1-1 with a microscopic 0.39 GAA and .895 save percentage, allowing just two goals in 464 minutes of game action.

Series History

  • Navy leads 10-3-4 in a series which dates back to 1993.
  • The Mids have a 6-1-4 edge since Loyola joined the Patriot League prior to the 2013 season, with the lone Greyhound victory a 2-1 double overtime triumph at Ridley on Sept. 24, 2016.
  • The teams have met four times in the past two seasons, including a pair of ties back in 2019. Loyola clinched a PL tournament spot with scoreless draw at Navy in the regular season finale, and the Greyhounds were eliminated on PK's in the semifinals after a 1-1 draw in Annapolis the following weekend.
  • Navy earned a 1-0 overtime victory in the regular season meeting at Ridley last spring, and edged out another 1-0 win in the Patriot League semifinal rematch on April 14.

Scouting Navy

  • The Midshipmen (4-4-1, 0-1-0 PL) have lost four of their last five games overall, including a 4-2 setback at Bucknell in their conference opener on Saturday.
  • The four goals allowed were Navy's most against a Patriot League opponent since Oct. 28, 2005 (4-3 loss at Bucknell).
  • Navy began the year with a 3-0-1 record in its first four games, a run capped by a 3-1 win at Maryland on Aug. 29.
  • The Mids claimed their second-straight Patriot League title, their fifth overall in program history, after topping Colgate on PK's following a 1-1 draw.
  • Jr. F Caitlin Doran leads Navy with four goals this season. Seniors Avery Fries and Victoria Tran were both included on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team, with Tran also recognized as the conference's Preseason Midfielder of the Year.
  • So. GK Mattie Gallagher, younger sister of Loyola's Kaleigh Gallagher, has started all nine games in goal. She is 3-4-1 with a 1.50 GAA and a .745 save percentage.
Recipes for Success
  • With Saturday's 2-1 victory over Colgate, the Greyhounds have now won each of the last 11 games in which they have scored two goals or more, a streak which dates back to Sept. 6, 2018. Loyola is 3-0-0 when scoring multiple goals this season.
  • The Greyhounds are also undefeated (3-0-0) when leading at halftime this fall. They are 5-0-1 overall in their last six games when holding an advantage at the intermission.
Strong D at Home
  • Loyola has held opponents to one goal or fewer in 14-straight home games dating back to Sept. 13, 2019.
  • The Greyhounds have surrendered just three goals in 475 minutes of game action at Ridley Athletic Complex this season.
  • Loyola has not surrendered a first-half goal at Ridley since Oct. 19, 2019 vs. Lafayette, with opponents scoreless at halftime in each of the last 10 home games.

Early Offensive Leaders

  • Ada Clare Tempert (3 G), Baylee DeSmit (2 G, 1 A) and Sarah Mirr (1 G, 2 A) continue to lead the Greyhounds in scoring through the season's first nine games.
  • Of Tempert's three goals, two have been game-winners (Sept. 9 at Howard, Sept. 18 vs. Colgate).
  • Fourteen different Greyhounds have at least one point on the year, while Loyola has had seven different goal scorers.
  • DeSmit has 22 shots for the Greyhounds, 13 more than any other player.
  • Kelly Hutton scored the lone goal in Loyola's season-opening 1-0 win over Marist (8/19), and Olivia Quaranta's first collegiate strike was the game-winner in a 5-1 home victory over Iona (8/29).

Quick Notes

  • Sarah Bayer became the program's first three-time All-Patriot League honoree after earning third team accolades last spring, and she is Loyola's active scoring leader with 25 points (10 G, 5 A) in 50 collegiate appearances.
  • Loyola has earned a result in 11 of 14 regular season games against Patriot League opponents since 2019, going 6-3-5 during that stretch.
  • Nine of 11 primary starters from the spring are back for the Greyhounds this season, including six former All-Patriot League players in Bayer (2018 - 2nd Team, 2019 - 1st Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team) Paige Sim (2019 - 2nd Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team), Ada Clare Tempert (Spring 2021 - 1st Team), Kaleigh Gallagher (2019 - 3rd Team), Julia Gray (2019 - 2nd Team) and Nicole Rivas (Spring 2021 - 3rd Team).
  • Gray, who served as Loyola's co-SAAC president for the 2020-21 academic year, was announced in June as the Patriot League's representative on the NCAA Division I SAAC. She begins her two-year term this fall.
  • Gray, Rivas and Gillian Borton were chosen as team captains for the 2021 season. Borton is a first-year team captain, while Gray and Rivas served as co-captains for the 2020-21 academic year.
  • A second team All-Patriot League honoree in 2019, Gray was also a Preseason All-Patriot League selection in the spring before missing a majority of the season due to injury. She started all 19 games at center back in 2019, anchoring a defense which surrendered just seven goals over the season's final 12 contests.
  • Loyola has two of the last three Maryland Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year honorees on its roster, with Tempert recognized in 2019 and freshman Baylee DeSmit chosen in 2020.

Last Season

  • A season unlike any other culminated in a return trip to the Patriot League Final Four for Loyola, as the Greyhounds went 3-1-1 in regular season play to clinch the No. 2 seed in the conference's South division standings.
  • Loyola's season ultimately ended with a tight 1-0 defeat to eventual conference champions Navy in the semifinals.
  • The Greyhounds outscored their opponents by an overall margin of 4-3 during the shortened spring campaign.
  • Claire Beath, a first team All-Patriot League selection in her final collegiate season on the backline, was the lone field player to play in all 564 minutes.
