The Matchup

  • Loyola women's soccer returns to the road this weekend, facing off against Army West Point for the first time since 2019.
  • The Greyhounds will be looking to earn the program's first road win over the Black Knights.

Last Time Out

  • Caitlin Doran opened the scoring in the 28th minute, and Kassidy Borden added an insurance strike with 15:03 remaining in regulation to help Navy top Loyola by a 2-0 final at Ridley Athletic Complex on Wednesday.
  • The Mids (5-4-1, 1-1-0 PL) won their third straight in the series and sent the Greyhounds to just their second home defeat of the season.
  • Paige Sim made three stops in goal, as she surrendered multiple goals to a Patriot League opponent for the first time in 19 conference games.
  • Navy finished the night with a 12-5 in shots, while the Greyhounds earned seven of the game's 10 corner kicks.
  • Making her first collegiate start, Kelly Hutton led Loyola offensively with a pair of shots.

Sim Repeats as Patriot League's Goalkeeper of the Week

  • Paige Sim was announced as the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week for a second-consecutive Monday. She picks up her sixth-career weekly award from the conference overall (5x Goalkeeper of the Week, 1x Rookie of the Week).
  • Sim was recognized after making three saves, all in the second half, during Loyola's victory over Colgate.
  • For the year, Sim is now 4-5-1 with a 1.29 goals-against average, a .776 save percentage and three shutouts. Taking away Loyola's defeats to ACC leaders Clemson and Wake Forest, she is 4-3-1 with a 0.74 GAA and .846 save perentage.
  • Sim was a third team All-Patriot League honoree during the 2021 spring season, and she was a second team selection following her freshman season in 2019.
  • For her career, Sim is 13-9-7 with a 0.77 GAA, a .829 save percentage and 11 shutouts.

Series History

  • Army leads 4-2-1 in a series which began when Loyola joined the Patriot League in 2013.
  • The home team has never lost in the series, with Army going 4-0-0 at West Point and Loyola holding a 2-0-1 edge during games played in Baltimore.
  • All six victories in the series have been decided by one goal, with five of those contests ending in 1-0 scorelines.
  • Army pulled out a 1-0 win in overtime during the most-recent meeting on Oct. 12, 2019, with Aunikah King providing the game-winner in the 93rd minute.
  • Loyola's last victory in the series was a 1-0 triumph at Ridley Athletic Complex on Sept. 29, 2018.

Scouting Army West Point

  • The Black Knights (4-4-2, 1-0-1 PL) have scored eight goals in their first two Patriot League games, drawing 3-3 at Lehigh last Saturday and earning a 5-1 victory at Holy Cross on Wednesday.
  • Thirteen different players have at least one point on the year, with So. F Jasmine Talley (3 G, 3 A) and Jr. M Dara Murray (2 G, 3 A) leading the offense.
  • Fr. GK Sage Strohman has started 6 of 10 games, including each of the last four contests, in goal. She leads the Patriot League in both goals-against average (1.09) and save percentage (.800).
  • Army went 9-7-4 (4-3-2 PL) during its most-recent full season in 2019, falling 2-1 to Navy in the Patriot League Championship game.
  • The Black Knights had the highest winning percentage among Patriot League schools during the spring 2021 season at 4-1 (2-1 Nouth), but missed out on the conference tournament due to division tiebreakers.
Quick Notes Entering the Weekend
  • Eight players (Gillian Borton, Julia Gray, Chloe Kuminkoski, Sarah Mirr, Nicole Rivas, Alex Searing, Paige Sim, Ada Clare Tempert) have started each of the first 10 games for the Greyhounds.
  • Searing and Jess Korman each recorded their first collegiate points on assists during last Saturday's victory over Colgate.
  • Gray leads all field players in minutes played (833). She has played every minute on the backline in four of Loyola's last five contests.
  • The Greyhounds' lone road victory so far this season was a 2-0 triumph at Howard on Sept. 9. That win was the 100th at Loyola and 150th overall for head coach Joe Mallia.
Recipes for Success
  • With last weekend's 2-1 win over Colgate, the Greyhounds have now won each of the last 11 games in which they have scored two goals or more, a streak which dates back to Sept. 6, 2018. Loyola is 3-0-0 when scoring multiple goals this season.
  • The Greyhounds are also undefeated (3-0-0) when leading at halftime this fall. They are 5-0-1 overall in their last six games when holding an advantage at the intermission.

Offensive Leaders

  • Ada Clare Tempert (3 G), Baylee DeSmit (2 G, 1 A) and Sarah Mirr (1 G, 2 A) continue to lead the Greyhounds in scoring through the season's first 10 games.
  • Of Tempert's three goals, two have been game-winners (Sept. 9 at Howard, Sept. 18 vs. Colgate).
  • Fourteen different Greyhounds have at least one point on the year. Kaleigh Gallagher became the team's seventh different goal scorer after striking late in the first half of last weekend's win over Colgate.
  • DeSmit has 23 shots for the Greyhounds, 13 more than any other player.
  • Kelly Hutton scored the lone goal in Loyola's season-opening 1-0 win over Marist (8/19), and Olivia Quaranta's first collegiate strike was the game-winner in a 5-1 home victory over Iona (8/29).

Worth Noting

  • Sarah Bayer became the program's first three-time All-Patriot League honoree after earning third team accolades last spring, and she is Loyola's active scoring leader with 25 points (10 G, 5 A) in 51 collegiate appearances.
  • Loyola has earned a result in 11 of 15 regular season games against Patriot League opponents since 2019, going 6-4-5 during that stretch.
  • Nine of 11 primary starters from the spring are back for the Greyhounds this season, including six former All-Patriot League players in Bayer (2018 - 2nd Team, 2019 - 1st Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team) Paige Sim (2019 - 2nd Team, Spring 2021 - 3rd Team), Ada Clare Tempert (Spring 2021 - 1st Team), Kaleigh Gallagher (2019 - 3rd Team), Julia Gray (2019 - 2nd Team) and Nicole Rivas (Spring 2021 - 3rd Team).
  • Gray, who served as Loyola's co-SAAC president for the 2020-21 academic year, was announced in June as the Patriot League's representative on the NCAA Division I SAAC. She begins her two-year term this fall.
  • Gray, Rivas and Gillian Borton were chosen as team captains for the 2021 season. Borton is a first-year team captain, while Gray and Rivas served as co-captains for the 2020-21 academic year.
  • A second team All-Patriot League honoree in 2019, Gray was also a Preseason All-Patriot League selection in the spring before missing a majority of the season due to injury. She started all 19 games at center back in 2019, anchoring a defense which surrendered just seven goals over the season's final 12 contests.
  • Loyola has two of the last three Maryland Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year honorees on its roster, with Tempert recognized in 2019 and freshman Baylee DeSmit chosen in 2020.

Last Season

  • A season unlike any other culminated in a return trip to the Patriot League Final Four for Loyola, as the Greyhounds went 3-1-1 in regular season play to clinch the No. 2 seed in the conference's South division standings.
  • Loyola's season ultimately ended with a tight 1-0 defeat to eventual conference champions Navy in the semifinals.
  • The Greyhounds outscored their opponents by an overall margin of 4-3 during the shortened spring campaign.
  • Claire Beath, a first team All-Patriot League selection in her final collegiate season on the backline, was the lone field player to play in all 564 minutes.
Smart Hounds
  • Loyola finished the 2021 spring semester with an impressive 3.604 team GPA. A total of 17 Greyhounds recorded a semester GPA above 3.60, with Gillian Borton, Kaleigh Gallagher, Julia Gray, Chloe Kuminkoski, Sarah Mirr and Jenna Nall all posting perfect 4.0 GPA's.
  • Sarah Bayer (biology/speech pathology interdisciplinary major, 3.95 GPA) and Paige Sim (biology major, 3.94 GPA) were both Academic All-Patriot League selections, with Bayer later becoming the program's first CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree since 2012.
