Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Old Dominion Hands Men’s Soccer First Defeat of 2021

NORFOLK, Va. – Karan Mandair scored the game's only goal in the 57th minute, and goalkeeper Djibril Doumbia made a point blank save with 5:37 remaining to help Old Dominion hand Loyola University Maryland a 1-0 setback on Friday night.

The Greyhounds (1-1-0) begin a five-game road swing with their first defeat of the fall, while the Monarchs (1-1-0) enter the win column for the first time. The two teams were facing each other for the first time since September, 2016.

ODU had an 8-2 shot advantage in the opening half, but the only shot on goal for either side was easily corralled by Loyola's Chase Vosvick in the 42nd minute.

Justin Ingram had the first two shots after the intermission, including a hard liner sent just wide of goal 4:12 into the half. The Monarchs, though, jumped in front after a cross from Eli Carr was side-footed by Mandair straight into the right corner.

The Greyhounds had six shots over the final half hour during their search for an equalizer. The top chance came in the 85th minute, when a cross by Sean Graham made it to Loc San in the box with only the goalie to beat. Doumbia, though, was up to the task, and an ensuing effort by Kelan Swales was sent wide.

Loyola generated one final corner kick two minutes later but did not manage another shot. Both sides earned three corners in the game, while ODU finished with a slim 13-10 edge in shots.

The Greyhounds are back in action on Monday night, when they travel to West Virginia for a matchup beginning at 7 p.m.
