Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Brown’s Late Plays Spark 12-0 Closing Run In Men’s Basketball Win

BALTIMORE – Lafayette College closed to within two points of Loyola University Maryland with just over four minutes remaining in Thursday night's Patriot League game, but several plays by David Brown III sparked the Greyhounds to a 12-0 run to close a 74-60 victory for their fourth-straight victory.

Cam Spencer started the run when he drove the right side of the lane and drew a foul, making two free throws to give Loyola a four-point lead, 64-60, at 3:03, but Neal Quinn appeared to get free at the rim for the Leopards, but Brown came with a weak-side blocked shot, and he tied Quinn up for the rebound to gain possession for the Greyhounds.

Loyola (10-6 overall, 4-1 Patriot League) turned it over on its next possession, but Cam Spencer had a steal on the defensive end to get the ball back. Brown then dribbled around the perimeter screen and pulled up from the free-throw line to sink a 17-foot jumper at 1:46, staking the Greyhounds to a 66-60 advantage.

Brown was at it again on the defensive end, blocking a Kyle Jenkins shot in the paint. The ball went out of bounds off Lafayette, and Jaylin Andrews was immediately fouled on the inbounds play.

Andrews made both free throws as part of his game-high 21 points, pushing the lead to eight with 1:29 left in regulation. This time on defense, Brown walled off a driving Jenkins and forced a turnover that would lead to Kenneth Jones making one of two at the line for the Greyhounds.

Another Lafayette turnover saw Spencer go to the line, and he also made one of two, stretching the lead to 10. Kenneth Jones then had a steal for Loyola, and Spencer scored on a fast-break to make it a 12-point game.

Jones would match his career-high with nine assists, and Spencer scored 14 points.

Andrews had a steal with 41 seconds left, and he made two free throws to seal the win for the Greyhounds.

He was one of four players in double-figures for the Greyhounds as Veljko Ilic had a career-high 14 points to match Spencer's total, and Jones added 10 to finish an assist away from a double-double for the second time this year.

Golden Dike grabbed a game-high eight rebounds as Loyola had a slim 29-28 advantage on the boards while shooting 55.1 percent from the field to Lafayette's 40.4.

Loyola led by 13 at halftime, 35-22, but Lafayette scored the first seven of the second half, forcing a Greyhounds timeout at 17:27.

Brown came into the lineup at that point and again sparked the Greyhounds, scoring in traffic along the left baseline before Ilic and Andrews also scored in the paint to push the lead back to 12, 41-29.

Loyola led for all but 33 seconds of the game after Lafayette (3-11, 0-3) scored the game's first basket. Quinn led the Leopards with 15 points, and Leo O'Boyle had 13.

The Greyhounds hit the road for their next game on Sunday, January 16, when they head to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to face Lehigh University at 2 p.m.
