BALTIMORE – Boston University finished the first half on a 22-0 run and extended it to 25-0 in the first two minutes of the second, and the Terriers pulled away for a 67-50 victory over host Loyola University Maryland on Wednesday night in Reitz Arena.
Cam Spencer put the Greyhounds (11-7 overall, 5-2 Patriot League) ahead 16-8 with a 3-pointer at 12:29, but Caelan Jones came back down and hit a three seven seconds later for Boston University (12-8, 3-4) to start the run.
Spencer's basket would be Loyola's last points of the first half as the Terriers took a 30-16 lead at the break.
Javante McCoy scored in the paint 1:51 into the second half to stretch the lead to 33-17 before two free throws by
Golden Dike provided Loyola's first points since Spencer's.
Dike's free throws also started an 8-0 Loyola run that saw the Greyhounds cut their deficit to nine, 33-24, on back-to-back threes by Spencer and
Milos Ilic. Boston University, however, responded with an 11-1 run to go up 19 with 12:21 on the clock.
The lead would again be 19 after a Sukhmail Mathon bucket with 7:47 to go in regulation before Loyola scored 10-straight with a
Jaylin Andrews free throw cutting it to 56-47 at 4:40.
That would be as close as the Greyhounds would get the remainder of the way.
Spencer finished with 19 points and was the only Loyola player in double figures.
Milos Ilic had nine, and Dike scored eight.
Jones and Walter Whyte posted 15 each for the Terriers, and Mathon recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Loyola continues Patriot League play on Saturday, January 22, when it hosts American University at 2 p.m. in Reitz Arena.
