Brown Scores Career-High 22, But Southern Knocks Off Men’s Basketball

NICEVILLE, Fla. – David Brown III posted new career-highs of 22 points and seven rebounds on Friday afternoon, but Southern University scored 37 points off 31 Loyola University Maryland turnovers to beat the Greyhounds, 76-58, in the Emerald Coast Classic at Raider Arena.

Brown made 8 of 10 shots from the field, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range, to easily eclipse his previous best of eight points set last season at Army West Point. His seven rebounds also bettered his top rebounding performance by three.

Alonso Faure scored in double-figures for the third game in a row – he had only two 10-plus point performances entering the 2022-2023 season – with 10 points, and he also had seven rebounds. Isaiah Alexander added nine points and eight rebounds while also collecting three steals and three assists.

Southern (2-3 overall) took a 13-point lead, 20-7, with 11:37 to play in the first half, but Brown led a 10-2 Greyhounds run with a pair of 3-pointers and a layup to close the gap to five, 22-17, with 8:39 to play.

The Jaguars, however, would scored 11 in a row to built a 16-point advantage with five minutes left in the period.

Loyola cut a 17-point halftime deficit to 12, 47-35, on Brown's third three of the game at 17:22 in the second half, but Southern pushed it back to as many as 24 over the next seven minutes.

The Greyhounds will compete in their final game at the tournament on Saturday morning, tipping off against either Louisiana Monroe at 10 a.m. (CST).
