Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rally Comes Up Short For Men’s Basketball Against Colgate

BALTIMORE – Colgate University led by 17 points with 13:15 left in regulation on Saturday in Reitz Arena, but Loyola University Maryland made it a two-possession game late before the Raiders secured a 64-56 win in the final seconds.

Nelly Cummings put Colgate ahead 45-28 on a jumper with 14:52 to go, and the score remained as such for nearly two minutes until Wade Jackson made a pair of free throws for the Greyhounds at 13-10.

That started a 10-0 Loyola run that saw Jaylin Andrews score five, including a 3-pointer at 10:19 that got the deficit to seven for the Greyhounds.

Jack Ferguson responded with a three for Colgate at 9:18, but a driving basket by Jackson pulled it back to 48-40. Oliver Lynch-Daniels made a three 29 seconds after Jackson's layup, and Colgate's lead was 11.

Loyola scored the next five with a Cam Spencer three from the top-left of the perimeter drawing Loyola within six, 51-45, at 7:20. Two minutes later, Cummings was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made two of the three shots to stretch the lead back to 10 before another three by Andrews 22 ticks of the clock later.

Two Ryan Moffat free throws at 2:43 made it 59-49 Colgate, but Spencer drained another three, and Andrews converted in the paint at 1:44 to get the margin to five, 59-55. Cummings made the first of two free throws at 1:12, but he missed the second, and Veljko Ilic scored with 61 seconds left to get Loyola within four.

Loyola fouled Tucker Richardson 12 seconds later, and he missed both free throws with Andrews grabbing his eighth rebound of the game.

After a missed Loyola shot, Loyola got an offensive rebound from Veljko Ilic, and after the ball rotated around, an entry pass was made to him, but after defensive contact, it was lost and Colgate came up with the loose ball.

Keegan Records then had a transition two, and Cummings and Moffat both made 1 of 2 from the line in the last 20 seconds to provide the final difference.

Andrews had a game-high 19 points, but he was the only Loyola player in double figures. Golden Dike scored seven and grabbed a game-best 10 rebounds, helping Loyola control a 45-39 advantage on the boards. Neither team shot above 35 percent in the game as Colgate was at 34.5 percent, and Loyola 33.3.

The Greyhounds continue Patriot League play on Wednesday, February 16, in Easton, Pennsylvania, where they will face Lafayette College at 7 p.m.
