Second Quarter Run Propels No. 2 Maryland Past Men’s Lacrosse

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Jack Koras scored for the University of Maryland with 30 seconds to go in the first quarter, sparking a 10-2 run that ran through halftime as the No. 2-ranked Terrapins defeated No. 10 Loyola University Maryland, 20-8, on Saturday in the Greyhounds' season-opener at Maryland Stadium.

Eight different players scored for the Terrapins (2-0 overall) during the run that saw them take a 14-5 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Evan James scored off an Aidan Olmstead assist on extra-man to start the third quarter scoring, but Maryland reeled off five-straight goals to thwart any chance of a rally.

Olmstead and Adam Poitras both had three points as Poitras scored twice and assisted on a goal, while Olmstead scored one and had two helpers. Riley Seay also scored two goals, while Kevin Lindley, Dylan Binney and James had the other Greyhounds goals.

Maryland opened the first quarter with three goals in the opening 7:40, going up 3-0 on a Logan Wisnauskas strike at the 7:20 mark.

Loyola (0-1), however, rallied with two goals over the next four-plus minutes, scoring initially as Kevin Lindley caught a skip pass at goal-line, and got into the interior of the defense to score at 5:35.

Poitras then dodged out of the right alley to score his first of the day at 3:51.

Koras' goal, however, gave Maryland a 4-2 lead going into the second quarter and kicked off the rally.

Poitras broke up a 4-0 Terrapins run with his second goal of the half at 10:50 in the second quarter, and after two more Maryland goals, the Greyhounds had an elongated offensive possession. Olmstead was on the left side and fed Seay cutting up the middle for a 10-yard shot with two on the shot clock, cutting the deficit to 9-4.

Wisnauskas, however, scored six seconds later at 4:44 with a goal from right point to open another 4-0 Terrapins run.

Olmstead dodged for a goal 14 ticks before halftime, although Maryland got another unsettled goal from Luke Wierman seven seconds later, and the Terrapins took a 14-5 lead at the half.

The Greyhounds will return to action on the field on Saturday, February 19, when they travel to nearby Johns Hopkins University. The game will be the second of a Blue Jays-Greyhounds doubleheader as the women's teams play at 11 a.m. and the men at 2 p.m.
