Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Late Run Pushes Johns Hopkins Past Men’s Lacrosse

BALTIMORE – Seth Higgins' goal less than five minutes into the fourth quarter gave Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse a 10-8 lead, but Johns Hopkins University scored the game's final three goals to edge the Greyhounds, 11-10, on Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field.

Joey Kamish scored with no time left on the clock in the third quarter, his fourth goal of the game, to put Loyola back in front by a goal, and Higgins caught a Kevin Lindley feed and scored on the crease. That goal provided a two-goal lead for the second time in the game and the first since the middle of the second quarter.

The Blue Jays, however, got back within one when Ryan Evans scored unassisted at 9:15, and Joey Epstein caught a Jack Keogh pass to score on extra-man at 6:47, knotting the game at 10-10.

Loyola won the next faceoff, but the Greyhounds turned the ball over, and Johns Hopkins long-stick midfielder Scott Smith went the distance to score on a low shot at 5:22, putting the Blue Jays back in front.

The Greyhounds got the ball back after a Johns Hopkins turnover, but they had a shot-clock violation of their own and gave the ball back at 2:47.

Loyola would find itself back with possession after a Blue Jays pass went off the mark at 1:50, but Johns Hopkins doubled the ball high on the left side and came away with a caused turnover at 1:18.

The Blue Jays cleared the ball and called a timeout at 1:01. Loyola put its goalkeeper on the other side of the field to ride, doubling the ball on the restart. The move paid off as the Greyhounds regained possession a quickly after the timeout.

Again, Johns Hopkins forced the ball to the ground after a Loyola offensive player appeared to have gained a step on the defender. He went to the ground, and the Blue Jays came away with the ball, allowing Johns Hopkins to run out the clock.

Neither Loyola, nor Johns Hopkins led by more than two goals in the game with the Greyhounds' leads at 10-8 and 6-4 serving as the only two-goal leads.

Kamish led the Greyhounds with four goals, and Aidan Olmstead had four assists. Lindley had a goal and an assist, while Evan James scored twice, too. Max McGillicuddy had the first two points of his collegiate career with a pair of assists, and Mustang Sally scored his first point in a Loyola uniform with an assist on a Payton Rezanka goal in transition to open the game.

Loyola had a 33-27 advantage in ground balls, thanks to eight from Bailey Savio. He finished 12 of 21 on faceoffs, going eight of 10 in the second half.

Rezanka and Matt Hughes each had three caused turnovers, while Olmstead and James both had a two on rides as Loyola broke up eight of Johns Hopkins' 26 clearing attempts.

Loyola makes its home debut next week, hosting Rutgers University on Saturday, February 26, in a 12 noon game at Ridley Athletic Complex.
