BALTIMORE –
Aidan Olmstead had a goal and an assist during a 3-0 run by Loyola University Maryland in the third quarter Saturday, but Rutgers University came back to score four in the last 4:52 on the frame as part of a 5-0 run, and the sixth-ranked Scarlet Knights held off the Greyhounds, 13-12, at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Dan Wigley and Shane Knobloch traded goals for the teams at 11:13 and 9:01 of the third quarter with Knobloch's evening the game at 8-8.
Olmstead then caught
Kevin Lindley cutting to the right side where he threw him a pass for a goal at 7:42, starting the Loyola run.
Olmstead added an unassisted goal of his own at 6:34, slinging a left-handed rip from the right side to put Loyola ahead 10-8. He finished the day with seven points on two goals and five assists.
The Greyhounds then scored their second extra-man goal of the day as
Joey Kamish zipped a pass from high-to-low, and
Adam Poitras finished inside for his fourth of the day at 5:39, staking the Greyhounds to an 11-8 lead. It was the first three-goal lead for either team in the game.
Knobloch, however, came back to score unassisted at 4:52, and Ronan Jacoby followed suit at 3:17.
Ross Scott then used a Mitch Bartolo pass to score at 1:12, tying the game at 11-11, and Scott gave the Scarlet Knights (5-0 overall) a 12-11 lead 32 seconds before the end of the third quarter.
Scott then opened the fourth with an unassisted goal 47 seconds in, and Rutgers led by two.
The score remained 13-11 for almost 10 minutes until
Seth Higgins got his hands free out of a dodge to score with 4:34 on the clock, pulling the Greyhounds within one.
Loyola then won the faceoff, but Colin Kirst made a save for Rutgers on a shot less than 30 seconds later. The Greyhounds forced a Scarlet Knights shot-clock violation, but gave possession back with a turnover with 84 seconds left in regulation.
Rutgers cleared and ran out the clock on the game.
In addition to Olmstead's seven points,
Adam Poitras scored four goals, and
Kevin Lindley had three.
Lindley's last goal tied the Patriot League's all-time record of 164, matching the total put up by Colgate's Peter Baum from 2010-2013.
Joey Kamish had three assists, and
Seth Higgins posted a goal and an assist.
Evan James and
Dan Wigley each scored once for the Greyhounds.
Bailey Savio went 16 of 29 on faceoffs for the Greyhounds, picking up nine ground balls.
Loyola is back in action quickly when they host Towson University on Wednesday, March 2, at 5 p.m. at Ridley Athletic Complex.
