BALTIMORE –
Kevin Lindley scored the 165
th goal of his career in the second quarter, breaking the Patriot League's all-time record, but Towson University dealt Loyola University Maryland an 11-8 setback on Wednesday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Lindley got his stick on a loose ball at the crease and scooped it in for a goal to break the record of 164 set by Colgate University's Peter Baum (2009-12).
The goal was Loyola's second in 10 seconds after
Joey Kamish had an unassisted goal , and it brought the Greyhounds to a 6-5 lead. The Tigers, however, came back with an unassisted goal by Kyle Berkeley at 1:37 to tie the score at 6-6 going into halftime.
That goal started a 4-0 Towson run and would help it build a 9-6 lead on Berkeley's third of the evening with 4:38 to play in the third quarter.
Loyola got back within two, 9-7, when
Adam Poitras beat the shot clock buzzer with a deep goal off an
Evan James assist at 2:22.
The margin stayed at two for more than half a quarter until the Tigers scored on extra-man at 7:50 in the fourth. James Avanzato scored his second of the night on a Luke Shilling assist, and Towson was ahead 10-7.
Poitras got his second of the game with 25 ticks left in regulation, making it 10-8 Towson, but Shilling scored on an unsettled situation, six seconds later off the faceoff.
Loyola had a 40-36 advantage in shots and a 40-24 lead in ground balls.
Bailey Savio had his best performance of the season at the faceoff 'X,' winning 15 of 23 with a season-high 10 ground balls.
Loyola got off to a quick start as
Seth Higgins put it on the board 70 seconds into the contest with a hard shot off the run, but Shilling and Avanzato scored at 11:58 and 9:37 to five the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
Aidan Olmstead leveled the score at 2-2 when he caught a Poitras pass right-handed and switched to his left for a shot that would go in at 4:11.
Towson, however, went back in front by a goal at 2:57 on a Koby Smith shot that was deflected by found the net.
After that goal, Savio won the faceoff cleanly going forward, and he shot high-to-low, scoring four seconds after Smith for his first of the season. The goals by Smith and Savio are tied for the second-fastest goals by opposing teams in NCAA Division I history.
The Greyhounds then regained the lead at 4-3 when Higgins used a pick at the top of the box to gain separation, and
Dylan Binney popped out to the right, caught a Higgins pass and scored with 1:09 on the clock in the first.
Towson would score the first two of the second quarter on tallied by Shilling and Berkeley before Kamish and Lindley had Greyhounds goals.
The Greyhounds return to action quickly as they head to Easton, Pennsylvania, for their first Patriot League game of the year. They will play at Lafayette College in a 12 noon game on Saturday, March 5.
