EASTON, Pa. –
Aidan Olmstead tied his career-high with five goals, while three other Greyhounds had two or more, on Saturday as Loyola University Maryland beat host Lafayette College, 14-12, on Saturday afternoon in the teams' Patriot League opener.
Olmstead totaled six points, one off his previous high, adding an assist in the game, while
Joey Kamish scored three times and
Evan James twice.
Payton Rezanka scored two key third-quarter transition goals during a 5-1 Loyola run. He also had three caused turnovers and a ground ball defensively.
Lafayette scored the game's first goal on a Ryan Duncan strike, but Olmstead then ripped off two in the span of 33 seconds, first taking a
Liam Bateman pass to score and later using one from James at 5:20 that gave the Greyhounds the lead.
Kamish would step down from 15 and score at 4:32 in the first quarter, sending the teams to the second with Loyola ahead, 3-1.
John Mathes and Peter Lehman, however, scored for Lafayette at 11:44 and 10:44 in the second, and the Leopards tied the game at 3-3.
Olmstead then had his third point of the day, assisting on an
Adam Poitras goal at 8:57 to give the Greyhounds back the advantage. He would score his third of the day for the game's next tally as
Davis Lindsey looked through the defense to find him at right point for an extra-man goal at 4:30.
Cole Dutton, however, scored for the Leopards at 2:03, and it was a 5-4 Loyola lead at halftime.
Seth Higgins quickly extended that advantage to a pair when he used a
Joey Kamish assist 42 seconds into the fourth quarter. Mathes responded with his second of the day for the Leopards just under a minute later, but Olmstead caught a
Dylan Binney pass and whipped a behind-the-back shot for a goal at 10:01.
Evan James then scored his first of two at 9:01, and it was an 8-5 advantage for Loyola.
Carter Cecil and Macklin Fitzpatrick scored two for the Leopards 28 ticks apart, and the lead was trimmed to one, but Kamish registered his second on an assist from
Matt Heuston, for his first collegiate point.
Kamish's goal kicked off what would turn into a 5-1 Loyola run to put the game out of reach.
Scott Middleton caused a turnover and had a ground ball for the Greyhounds on defense, and he threw it ahead in a clear for Rezanka who scored at 2:48 to put Loyola up, 10-7. Charlie Cunniffe narrowed the gap to two with a Lafayette goal at 1:59, but Rezanka struck again before the end of the quarter.
Mustang Sally caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball with less than 15 seconds remaining in the stanza.
Matt Hughes pushed it ahead to
Ryan McNulty, and he threw to Rezanka coming down the middle for his second of the quarter.
James then started the fourth goal at 14:18, and Kamish added an unassisted tally at 11:16 to put the Greyhounds in front, 13-8.
Loyola had a 39-30 advantage in ground balls, led by 11 from
Bailey Savio. McNulty and
Kevin Lindley each had four. Rezanka caused three turnovers, while Sally and Poitras each had two.
