BALTIMORE – Jade Edwards gave American University a one-point lead with less than five seconds to play on Saturday, and the Eagles use their only lead of the game to depart Reitz Arena with a 49-48 Patriot League victory over host Loyola University Maryland.
The Greyhounds led for more than 37 minutes of the contest, and almost all of the other two-plus minutes were tied scored. Loyola was up 48-47 in the final 15 seconds before Edwards' winning layup.
Loyola led by as many as 11 points early in the second half, and it took a 43-34 lead into the fourth after
Bri Rozzi scored on a jumper with 53 ticks left in the third.
Edwards made a three at 6:55, and the Loyola lead was down to three, 43-40, but
Taleah Dixon banked in a three at 6:08, and the advantage was back to six.
Emily Johns converted a three from the top of the perimeter for the Eagles at 4:11, and Emily Fisher made 1 of 2 at the line to draw American within two, 46-44, at 3:40.
Both teams came up with defensive stops for over two minutes before Edwards was fouled in the paint. She also made 1 of 2 from the charity stripe, and that narrowed the Eagles' deficit to a single point, 46-45, with 62 seconds left.
The Greyhounds used nearly all of the shot clock on their ensuing possession, and
Devyne Newman drove the baseline on the right side, getting clear for a layup with 32 ticks on the clock, putting Loyola back up by three.
Edwards, however, was good on a driving layup 14 seconds later, and the Greyhounds called a timeout to move the ball into the frontcourt.
American needed to foul three times before it sent Loyola to the line, and both Greyhounds free throws rimmed out with 11 seconds left. Fisher grabbed the rebound for the Eagles and called timeout, again advancing the ball.
Edwards isolated outside of the high post and drove into traffic, but she split two defenders to get a layup off that found the net to put American in front for the only time in the game.
A desperation running three for Loyola did not fall, and the Eagles secure the win.
Newman was one of two Greyhounds to score 11 points in the game. She reached double-figures for the third game in a row, and
Laryn Edwards hit for 11, a season-high.
Lex Therien scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed a game-best 14 rebounds for her 14
th double-doubles of the year.
Edwards was the lone American player in double figures with 16 points.
Loyola wraps up the regular-season on Wednesday, March 2, with a 6 p.m. game at Army West Point.
