No. 9 Women's Lacrosse Holds On For 12-10 Win At No. 24 Penn

BALTIMORE - The No. 9 Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team held off a late surge by No. 24 Penn Wednesday afternoon and held on for a 12-10 victory at Franklin Field.

The Greyhounds held an 11-7 advantage with 12:08 to play, but three-straight goals from the Quakers cut Loyola's advantage to one with 6:39 to play. That's as close Penn would get though as the Greyhounds secured the victory by scoring with 40 seconds to play.

Sophomore Sydni Black scored a career-best four goals and graduate student Livy Rosenzweig added three goals and two assists for a game-high five points. Classmate Elli Kluegel contributed two goals and one assist, while graduate student Sam Fiedler, junior Emily Wills and freshman Georgia Latch all had one goal. Junior Catie Corolla rounded out the scoring with one assist.

For Penn (1-3 overall), Alyson Feeley led the way with four goals.

In goal for the Greyhounds (3-0), graduate student Kaitlyn Larsson stopped six shots, while Krissy Kowalski earned five saves for the Quakers.

A free position goal from Fiedler opened the scoring in the game at the 12:17 mark, followed by goals from Black and Kluegel to give the Greyhounds a 3-0 advantage less than 10 minutes into play.

Penn responded with its own three-goal run though, scoring the final goal of the first quarter and the first two of the second to knot the score at 3-3. A goal from Black with 45 seconds left in the first half regained the lead for the Greyhounds, but the Quakers had an answer 20 seconds later to send the two teams into the break tied, 4-4.

Latch started the second half scoring before the Greyhounds capitalized on a pair of failed clears to pull ahead 7-4 at the 8:07 mark of the third quarter. Corolla first assisted Black and then Kluegel assisted Rosenzweig.

Penn halted Loyola's three-goal run with a goal at 7:08, before goals from Wills and Rosenzweig gave the Greyhounds their largest lead of the game, 9-5, with 1:55 to play in the third quarter.

The Quakers netted the next two goals, the last of the third quarter and first of the fourth, but scores from Rosenzweig and Black stretched Loyola's lead to four again, 11-7, with 12:08 to play.

Three-straight goals from Penn pulled the Quakers within one, 11-10 with 6:39 to play, but Rosenzweig found Kluegel for the game's final goal with 40 seconds on the clock.

Loyola will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Penn State at noon.
