Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Fourth-Ranked Syracuse Holds Of No. 6 Women's Lax, 14-13

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The sixth-ranked Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team scored the game's final four goals before the Greyhounds had their fifth-straight - and potentially game-tying - goal called off in the final seconds, as No. 4 Syracuse held off the Greyhounds for a 14-13 victory in the Carrier Dome Tuesday night.

Graduate student Livy Rosenzweig led the Greyhounds with five points, scoring four goals and assisting one other, while classmate Elli Kluegel and senior Jillian Wilson also scored four goals. Sophomore Sydni Black added one goal and freshman Georgia Latch contributed a game-high four assists.

The Greyhounds (9-1 overall) maintained the advantage through a back-and-forth first half, but three-straight Orange goals in the final 1:12 of the half gave Syracuse (9-2) its first lead of the game and a 7-5 halftime advantage. Rosenzweig had scored the first goal of the game just 40 seconds into play, but the next 10 minutes would be scoreless, until Syracuse found the back of the net at the 4:24 mark. Kluegel twice regained the lead for Loyola, scoring at 2:59 and then again at 1:41, following an Orange goal. Syracuse closed out the first-quarter scoring at 1:13 to tie the game at 3-3.

Wilson started the second-quarter scoring at 9:15 and Kluegel gave Loyola its first two-goal advantage, 5-3, at the 7:53 mark. The Orange pulled within one at 6:58 and then scored another three-straight goals in the final 1:12 to take the lead into halftime.

Syracuse stretched its run to five-straight goals as it opened the third quarter with a strike, but Loyola responded with three of the next four goals to pull within one, 9-8, at the 8:26 mark. Black scored first, and then it was back-to-back goals from Rosenzweig that cut the deficit to one.

The Orange wouldn't allow Loyola to even the score though, as they scored the next three to stretch their lead back to four, 12-8. Kluegel's fourth goal, assisted by graduate student Sam Fiedler, halted the streak with 29 seconds to go in the third quarter.

Although Syracuse scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter, the defense would hold the Orange scoreless for the final 13:11 of play. Meanwhile, Wilson netted back-to-back goals to cut the Greyhounds deficit to three, 14-11, with 8:58 to play. Rosenzweig then converted a free-position goal at 2:15 before Latch found Wilson for a fourth-straight Greyhound goal, bringing Loyola within one, 14-13, with 24 seconds to play. Rosenzweig won the ensuing draw control and looked to have assisted Latch on a quick transition goal, but an offensive foul on the Greyhounds negated the goal and allowed Syracuse to hold on for the victory.

Syracuse's Emma Tyrrell led all players with four goals, seven points and seven draw controls, although the Greyhounds won the battle on the draw, 18-13. For Loyola, senior Katie Detwiler won six draws, while Rosenzweig and Wilson finished with five each.

In goal for the Greyhounds, Larsson turned back nine shots, while Kimber Hower earned 12 saves for the Orange.

Loyola will return to action on Saturday as it travels to Worcester, Mass., for a Loyola-Holy Cross lacrosse doubleheader. The men's teams will play first at noon, followed by the women's game at 3 p.m.
