Golf Starts 11th Bid To NCAA Regional On Monday At PGA National Resort

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Loyola University Maryland golf will make its 11th all-time appearance in the NCAA Regional Championships starting on Monday when the Greyhounds tee off in the first round of the Palm Beach Gardens Regional.

Loyola will compete in the 54-hole tournament over three days against teams from around the nation: Campbell, College of Charleston, Charleston Southern, Davidson, Florida, Florida State, Furman, Gardner Webb, Indiana, Little Rock, Mercer, New Mexico, UNC Greensboro, Notre Dame, Purdue, San Diego, South Florida and Vanderbilt.

Brandon Berry, Carlo Pizzano, Matt Malits, Mike Crowley and Brett Inserra will play in the Greyhounds line with four scoring each day.

PGA National Resort will host the tournament on its Champion Course, home of the PGA Tour's Honda Classic. The Tom and George Fazio designed par-72, 7,045-yard course has a 75.4 rating and a 144 slope rating. It was redesigned in 2014 by Jack Nicklaus and features "The Bear Trap," three holes designed by Nicklaus that are called three of the toughest holes in golf.

Pizzano had the best finish of his college career, tying for first at the Patriot League Championships earlier this month as the Greyhounds won the conference title for the fifth time since joining the League in 2013-2014.

The junior earned All-Patriot League First Team honors along with graduate student Brandon Berry who was third at the Championships.

Berry leads the Greyhounds with a 71.30 scoring average (-0.15 to par) this season. He had four top-four finishes in 2021-2022, including a win at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate in Maui. Berry, who won the 2021 Patriot League Championship, leading the Greyhounds to that title, as well, has 10 rounds in the 60s this season and 22 at par or better. His nine eagles this season ran tied for third in all of NCAA Division I, and his average of 4.64 subpar holes per round are 21st.

Pizzano's finish at the Patriot League Championships helped drop his scoring average for the year to 73.83 and move him into the No. 2 spot for the Greyhounds. He shot 72-68-72 at The Steel Club in the conference event to tie for the top spot after 54 holes.

Crowley and Inserra are just back of Pizzano in stroke average this year 73.93 averages. Crowley has played some of his best collegiate golf over the last two months with a tie for 16th at the Southern Invitational, tie for 21st at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial and a tie for 20th at the Patriot League Championship.

Inserra led the Greyhounds in their final regular-season tournament, the Rutherford Intercollegaite with a tie for 18th, and he matched Crowley with a tie for 20th at the Patriot League Championships. He was a key part of the Greyhounds winning the Georgetown Intercollegiate in October when he finished fourth at the tournament.

Malits had the best finish of his collegiate career at the Patriot League Championships when he tied for sixth and earned All-Patriot League Second Team recognition. Last week, he was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for his work in the classroom, as well, joining Pizzano on the Patriot League All-Academic Team.
