Army West Point Pulls Away In Second Half To Beat Men’s Hoops

BALTIMORE – Kenneth Jones scored in the paint and completed a traditional 3-point play with a free throw at 14:50, capping a 13-0 Loyola University Maryland run to start the second half which tied the score at 35-35, but visiting Army West Point went on a 7-0 run that ballooned to 17-4, and the Black Knights pulled away for a 78-55 Patriot League victory.

Alonso Faure got the second-half scoring started with a layup off a Chris Kumzeka assist on the Greyhounds first possession after the break, and Golden Dike then laid a basket off the glass.

Jones converted a tough pull-up from the left short-corner, and Faure made 1 of 2 at the line to draw Loyola within six, 35-29.

Faure then grabbed an offensive rebound and scored at 16:32, and the Army West Point lead was four. After the under-16 media timeout, Jones made two free throws, cutting the lead to three, and he converted the and-one to tie the game at 35-35 with 14:50 left in regulation.

During the run, Army West Point committed six turnovers and was 0 of 5 from the field, 0 of 2 from the free-throw line. Chris Mann stopped the run with a layup at 14:04, starting one that would go in the Black Knights' favor.

They would score seven in a row and 17 of 21 to lead 52-39 on a traditional 3-point play by Jalen Rucker. Loyola would not get back within single digits from that point forward.

Jones finished with 16 points to lead Loyola, while Kuzemka came off the bench with 10. Faure added nine points, seven rebounds and three blocks, and Jaylin Andrews tallied eight points.

Loyola will return to action on Sunday, January 8, with a road game at College of the Holy Cross at 1 p.m. in Worcester, Massachusetts.
