Loyola Athletics Mourns The Passing Of Jamal Barney ’11

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland athletics mourns the passing of former men's basketball player Jamal Barney, a 2011 graduate of the school and All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference guard.

Barney earned All-MAAC Second Team recognition in his first season with the Greyhounds, 2008-09, after transferring from Providence College where he played his first season of collegiate basketball in 2006-07.

The Baltimore native led the MAAC in scoring in 2008-09 with 18.1 points per game and finished his Loyola career with 1,028 points across three seasons.

He is the only player in program history to score 40 or more points twice in his career, doing so twice in the span of 11 days in January 2009 when he had 41 at Canisius and 40 against NJIT. In the game against NJIT, he set school single-game records with 18 free throws made and 22 attempted, marks that still stand.

Statement from Loyola Athletics:

"Loyola Athletics and the men's basketball program are deeply saddened to learn of Jamal Barney's passing. Our prayers are with his family and friends. Jamal was a tough and extremely talented competitor on the basketball court who also had a big smile and affection for his friends and family."
