Ava Therien drew a foul with .5 seconds remaining, as she made both free throws, as the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team held on for a 48-47 win over the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Wednesday night.
Ava and
Lex Therien played a high-low action on Lex's layup to draw the Greyhounds to within a point with 42 seconds remaining.
Loyola (2-1 overall) then came up with a defensive stop on the following possession, as the Greyhounds called a timeout with 5 seconds remaining.
Coming out of the timeout, the inbounds pass got deflected, as
Lex Therien put up a jump shot, the Greyhounds got two offensive rebounds, before
Ava Therien got fouled on her put back attempt with .5 seconds remaining, as the Greyhounds won 48-47.
Lex Therien had a game-high 19 points to go along with 7 rebounds.
Ava Therien had a season-high 12 points and 8 rebounds on the night.
Cristina Garcia added a season-high 7 points off the bench.
UMBC (1-2 overall) led at hafltime 22-20, thanks to a layup with 15 seconds remaining to pull ahead by two points.
The Retrievers started the second half on a 6-0 run to pull ahead to a eight point lead with 8:26 remaining in the third.
Ava and
Lex Therien responded by scoring on back-to-back possessions to pull to within four points.
Late in the third quarter,
Kimmie Hicks knocked down a pair of free throws to pull ahead, as the Greyhounds led 35-34 at the end of the third quarter.
The Retrievers knocked down a three-pointer with 3:50 remaining to take a 44-39 lead.
Lex Therien responded with a layup, followed by a Garcia reverse layup on the next possession to pull the deficit to within three points.
After a pair of Retriever free throws, the Greyhounds 6-0 run began with
Lex Therien's layup, as they went on to win 49-48.
The Greyhounds will be back in action next Wednesday as they host St. Francis in Reitz Arena at 2:00 PM.
