Kelly Ratigan scored 11 of the first 13 points in the third quarter for the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team on Wednesday night, but the Greyhounds could not overcome their first half deficit, as they lost on the road to St. John's University in a non-conference matchup.
St. John's (3-5 overall) made 6 of their first 8 shots in the first quarter, while the Greyhounds (3-3 overall) made just 1 of their first 7 shots in the first quarter, as the Red Storm took an early lead.
Cristina Garcia scored on a driving layup to cut the Loyola deficit down to six points, as they trailed 16-10 going into the media timeout. Coming out of the timeout, St. John's went on a 8-0 run to close out the first quarter.
St. John's continued their momentum in the second quarter, as they jumped out to a 32-12 lead with 7:24 left in the second quarter. Loyola got good shots to chip away at their deficit, but the shots did not fall, as they trailed 44-19 at halftime.
Coming out of halftime,
Kelly Ratigan caught fire, scoring 11 points in the third quarter, shooting a perfect 4-4 from the field, including 3-3 from three point range.
The Greyhounds outscored the Red Storm 30-27 in the second half, but could not overcome their deficit, as they lost 71-49.
Ratigan led Loyola with a career-high 23 points.
Lex Therien added 12 points and a team-high three assists.
Unique Drake led St. John's with 24 points.
Loyola will continue non-conference action on Saturday, when they host Mount St. Mary's for Victor Day at 12:00 PM.
