BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse scored the first three goals of the second half to take a lead it would not relinquish on Saturday, and the Greyhounds held off 18
th-ranked Johns Hopkins University, 12-10, at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Five different players scored overall in the second half as Loyola (1-0 overall) overcame a 7-6 halftime deficit.
Meg Hillman tied the game at 7-7 with a goal 3:55 into the third quarter, and
Chase Boyle scored her second of the afternoon just over a minute later, and the Greyhounds had a lead they would not relinquish.
Emily Wills, who had four points and a game-high three assists, scored with a Boyle helper at 2:54 to put Loyola in front by two for the first time in the game. Boyle tied Wills and Wilson for team-high honors with four points.
The Blue Jays (1-1) cut their deficit to 9-8 when Quinlan O'Brien scored with 12 ticks left in the third, but Wilson scored the fourth's first goal. Wills fed from 'X,' and Wilson came to the right post to catch and score on a one-timer at 12:27.
Johns Hopkins again pulled back within a goal 66 seconds later as Maeve Barker scored on an Ava Angello assist, but
Anna Ruby fed from goal-line extended to
Georgia Latch, and Latch scored on the doorstep with 8:21 left in regulation.
Sydni Black then utilized a Wills pass to score her second of the game at 3:24, and Loyola had its first three goal lead of the contest.
Wilson led Loyola with three goals for her 14
th career hat trick. Boyle, Ruby and Black all had two goals, and Hillman, Wills and Latch each tallied one.
The Greyhounds used a possession advantage to their benefit thanks to a 17-9 lead in draw controls.
Katie Detwiler had a game-high nine, and Wilson totaled five.
Lauren Spence made her first career start and had six saves in goal for the Greyhounds.
Loyola will be back on the field Wednesday, February 22, when it heads to nearby Towson University for a 4 p.m. game.
