BALTIMORE – The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's tennis teams both scored victories on Sunday as the men's team defeated visiting Norfolk State University, 5-2, and the women were 4-3 winners.
Doubles started off on a good note for the men with
Matt Cardano and
George Cavo beating Federico Rebecchini and Boris Lunin, 6-1, at No. 1, and
Oliver Davey and
Ryan Boland combining to take down Ibrahim Abbas and Hugo Massoni, 7-5, in the second spot.
Nick Haggar and
Nick Lawliss picked up a win by default at No. 3, and the men took a 1-0 lead into singles.
Cardano outlasted Rebecchini in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, for a win at No. 1, and Lawliss downed Roosevelt Brown II, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2.
Dylan Koziol knocked off Ibrahim Abbas, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5, and
Trevor Girandola won by default at No. 6.
The Spartans' Hugo Massoni Lena topped Cavo at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 7-5, and Lunin held off Davey, 5-7, 6-2, (10-5), in the third flight.
In the women's action,
Lauren Manwiller and
Christine Richiez shutout Laura Ruiz and Zada McMorris, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles, and the Greyhounds took the point as
Emi Shivkumar and
Anna Rico won by default at No. 3.
Norfolk State's Alek Evdokimova and Amai Gati edged
Olivia Tracey and
Jessica Bodewes, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles.
Rico and Shivkumar went on to win by default at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively, and Richiez clinched the team match by easing to a 6-1, 6-0 win over McMorris at No. 4.
Evdokimova beat Tracey, 6-0, 5-7. (10-3), at No. 1 singles, and Gati slipped past Manwiller, 3-6, 6-4, (12-10) at No. 2. Ruiz was a 6-3, 7-6 (4) winner at No. 3 over Bodewes.
The Greyhounds are back in action on Friday, March 3, when they play their Patriot League openers against Bucknell University. The road matches will start at 3 p.m. in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
