Baltimore, MD -- Syracuse University scored the final three goals in the fourth quarter, as the second-ranked Orange defeated the ninth-ranked Greyhounds 9-7 on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.
Chase Boyle scored with :24 seconds left in the third quarter, off of an assist from
Jillian Wilson, as the Greyhounds took their first lead of the game, 7-6. The Orange, however, scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to close out the Greyhounds.
Anna Ruby scored a career-high four goals on the night for the Greyhounds.
Chase Boyle had one goal and two assists on the night, while
Jillian Wilson and
Sydni Black both had one goal and one assist on the night.
Meg Hillman also added an assist.
Lauren Spence had seven saves on the evening, to go along with a ground ball and a caused turnover.
Syracuse (8-0 overall) scored the first goal of the game, as Emma Ward scored on a free-position shot. The Greyhounds followed it up with an Ruby goal off of an assist from Black with 8:58 left in the first quarter. The Orange scored three straight goals to end the first quarter with an 4-1 lead.
Both teams could not find the net in the first nine minutes of the second quarter, as Black scored for the Greyhounds on a free-position shot with 6:01 remaining in the first half. Both teams traded a goal down the stretch of the quarter, as the Orange scored with seven seconds left in the half to take a 6-3 halftime lead.
Loyola Maryland (5-2 overall) shut out the Orange in the third quarter, which is the first time they have gone scoreless in a quarter this season. The Greyhounds took advantage, as Ruby scored two goals within 38 seconds of each other, as the Greyhounds cut their deficit down to one goal with 8:56 left in the third quarter.
Wilson and Boyle took turns assisting each other for goals in the third quarter, as Boyle's goal with :24 seconds left gave the Greyhounds a 7-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Sierra Cockerille scored with 12:33 left in the fourth quarter for the Orange, as they tied the game at 7-7. Meaghan Tyrrell and Megan Carney added goals for the Orange down the stretch, as they would go on to shut out the Greyhounds throughout the rest of the fourth quarter, as they won 9-7.
The Greyhounds won the possession battle, as they won the draw control battle 14-5.
Jillian Wilson had seven draw controls on the evening, while
Katie Detwiler and
Chase Boyle added three each.
The Greyhounds defense held the No. 3 scoring offense to a season low nine goals on the game. The Orange also ranked No. 1 in the country in assists per game at 11.29, but the Greyhounds held them to just one assist.
Meaghan Tyrrell and Megan Carney led the Orange with two goals each, as Delaney Sweitzer had 8 saves on the night.
The Greyhounds will begin conference play on Saturday, as they host Lehigh at 12:00 PM.
