Crowley’s 5-Under Second Round Leads Golf At Maidstone

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. – Loyola University Maryland's Michael Crowley shot a 5-under 67 in the second round Monday at the Hamptons Intercollegiate and is tied for 11th after the opening day of the tournament at Maidstone Club.

Play was halted with numerous groups still on the course Monday evening due to darkness. The tournament, which Loyola is hosting for the fifth time, will resume Tuesday morning at 8:10. Players still on the course will finish their second rounds before continuing in the same groups for the third and final round.

Crowley was one of 16 players to complete his second round, and he took advantage of the optimal weather during the afternoon round. As a team, Loyola is fifth behind Ole Miss, Florida State, Wake Forest and Virginia.

He carded seven birdies – five on the course's back nine – and has posted the second-best score of the second round thus far. His 67 has moved him up 15 places to a tie for 11th after an opening-round 5-over 77.

The field's morning scores were significantly higher than the afternoon. Play began in the rain and was suspended within the first 45 minutes due to lightning. After a one-hour delay, players were back on the course, but Maidstone showed its teeth over the opening 18 holes.

The 66 players played to a scoring average of 77.68 on the 6,682-yard course. So far during the second round, the average score has dropped to 71.44 through the 16 scores that are final. Only four players were under par in the first round.

Crowley was 8-over par through 14 holes during the first round, but he birdied the next three holes to get back to 5-over. The graduate student played his final 22 holes at 8-under par on Monday.

Connor McGarrity led the Greyhounds in the first round with a 3-over 75, while Gustavo Rangel shot 4-over 76. Jackson Roman completed the scoring for Loyola with a 6-over 78.

McGarrity is one of the 16 players who has completed his second round and shot 2-over 74.

Eli Spaulding bounced back with an even-par 72 in his second round after shooting 82 in the morning. His comeback was made possible by a stellar final four holes. The freshman eagled the par-5 15th hole and then birdied the 16th and 17th before a par on the final hole.

Rangel is even through 16 holes in the second round, and Roman is 1-over with two to finish.
