ANNAPOLIS, Md. –
Caitlin Churney had team-highs of 11 kills, five blocks and five aces on Thursday night for Loyola Univeristy Maryland, but the U.S. Naval Academy knocked off the Greyhounds, 25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21.
Churney's ace total set a career-high, and her blocks were a season best.
Loyola came back to even the match at 1-1 after losing the first set, and Churney had a kill to give the Greyhounds an 11-6 lead in the third.
Navy got within three points, but kills by Churney and
Kacy Sekunda made it 13-8 Loyola before the Midshipmen reeled off five-straight points to tie the frame.
Loyola went up three, 17-14, with a
Morgan Crawford kill, but Navy again scored five in a row to lead 19-17.
The Midshipmen were up three, 21-18, but
Riley Hamilton, Crawford and Churney all had kills, and Loyola evented the stanza at 21-21. The Midshipmen had another run in them, however, scoring the last four points to take the set.
Loyola was ahead 15-11 in the fourth set after a Navy service error, but the Midshipmen scored seven in a row and went ahead 18-15 before closing out the match.
The Greyhounds will be back on the road Friday evening with a 6 o'clock match at American.
