Koi Sims grabbed 15 rebounds in her first action in over 500 days, but the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team fell to James Madison University, 85-54, in its season opener.
Kimmie Hicks finished with a team-high 14 points, while
Kelly Ratigan added 13 points off of the bench. Sims grabbed with a game-high 15 rebounds, one shy of her career high.
The Greyhounds (0-1 overall) got out to a strong start, as Laura Salmeron scored on Loyola's opening possession to take the early lead. Loyola continued the strong start throughout the first period, pacing the Dukes (2-0 overall) in the first quarter.
Kelly Ratigan knocked down a jump shot with 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter, and Loyola went into the second quarter up 16-15.
James Madison responded quickly in the second, breaking the game open with a 13-0 run to start the period to take a 28-16 lead at the second-quarter media timeout.
Loyola managed to cut into the James Madison deficit late in the second quarter with Ratigan knocking down a three right before the buzzer to cut its deficit to 38-27 going into halftime.
Both teams traded baskets over the first five minutes of the second half, and a
Lex Therien layup cut the James Madison lead down to 15 points with 1:47 remaining in the quarter, but the Dukes went on a 10-2 run over the last 1:47, as they led 60-37 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Greyhounds opened the fourth quarter with a pair of baskets, but the Dukes momentum continued in the fourth quarter, as James Madison held on for the 85-54 win.
Loyola will host UMBC on Sunday evening for their home opener in Reitz Arena at 5:00 PM.
