The Matchup
  • The Greyhounds will begin Postseason play on Saturday, as they will travel to face off against the No. 3 seeded American Eagles. 
  • The game will be played at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland. 
  • This will be the 56th matchup between the two programs, with Loyola holding the 31-17-7 edge. The Eagles won their matchup, 2-0, earlier this season thanks to two first half goals. 
  • This will be the first time since 2021 that the two teams face off in the postseason, with the last coming in 2021 when the Greyhounds won 2-1 in the Patriot League Championship

  • The Greyhounds entered the season as the Preseason favorites. Loyola earned 12 first place votes and a total of 150 points in the poll. The Greyhounds are 2-1-2 in their last five Patriot League home openers (excluding the 2020 season).  
  • In the Preseason United Soccer Coaches Poll, Clemson (#1), Marshall (#8), Hofstra (#17), and Syracuse (#25) were all ranked in the poll. Loyola will be on the road for Clemson, Marshall and Syracuse, while they will host Hofstra at home on September 24. 
  • Steve Nichols enters his 11th season at the helm for the Greyhounds, and has amassed a record of 76-68-39 (48-27-17) during his tenure. 

Last Time Out
  • The Greyhounds hosted the Bucknell Bison in their final regular season game of the season. 
  • Both offenses had limited chances in the game, as the game was fought in the midfield, as neither team could find the back of the net. 
  • Both teams each had two shots on goal in the game, as they battled to a 0-0 draw.

  • The Eagles come into the matchup with a 5-5-7 (4-2-3) record, as they secured the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Championships. 
  • They are coming off of a 3-1 win over Navy in their regular season finale. 
  • They come in with a 2-1-2 record over thier last five games, with their lone loss coming against Virginia. 
  • Troy Elgersma was named as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, as the junior leads the Patriot LEague with six assists on the season, while added three goals. 
  • Sam Hershey leads the team with 4 goals on the season.
  • In goal, Matthew Tibbetts has played every minute for the Eagles, tallying 65 saves, a .730 save percentage, and a 1.41 goals against average. 
  • In the teams first meeting, American won 2-0, thanks to goals from Elgersma and Samuel Hershey.

  • The Greyhounds are 49-15-15 in the Patriot League since the beginning of the 2016 season. 
  • In 2022, the Greyhounds set a program-high with 8 ties on the season.

Non-Conference Play
  • Over the past five seasons (excluding the 2020 season), the Greyhounds are 13-19-16 in non-conference play. 
  • Loyola has played all of their non-conference foes at least once before, and will face a familiar foe Iona, whom the Greyhounds were in the MAAC with prior to joining the Patriot League. 
  • During the 2023 season, the Greyhounds went 1-1-6 in non-conference play. Of their six ties, two came against ACC foes (North Carolina, Virginia Tech) and one came against then-No. 4 West Virginia, who reached the final four last season. 

Offensive Momentum
  • After a slow start to the season offensively, the Greyhounds have began to find success on the offensive end over the past few games.
  • Over their past ten games, the Greyhounds have scored two goals in six of those games. 
  • Caden Stafford has come up big for Loyola, recording four goals and two assists during the stretch, with two goals coming against Navy, and two assists coming against Holy Cross. 
  • Outside of Stafford, it has been a balanced effort, with seven other goal scorers during that period, as well as six different players recording an assist. 
  • During their stretch, the Greyhounds have also out shot their opponents 97-87 over the last eight games. 
  • Last season, the Greyhounds ranked third in the Patriot League in shots per game, while this season they rank sixth.
