Rockville -- The Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team forced overtime with a late goal against American University in a Patriot League Quarterfinals matchup on Saturday, but the Eagles won on penalty kicks, 5-4, to advance to the Semifinals.
After two scoreless overtime periods, Loyola and American headed to penalty kicks. Both teams scored on their first four penalty kicks, as
Sean McEvoy,
Jordy Luchies,
Oscar Halls, and
Juston Rainey converted on their penalty attempts, but the Greyhounds' fifth attempt went high. On the Eagles (6-5-8 overall) next penalty attempt, the shot went just high of
Dylan Van der Walt's diving save attempt, and the Eagles advance to the Semifinals.
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams battle in the midfield, the Greyhounds (4-7-6 overall) opened the scoring, as
Richie Nichols' shot bounced off of the Eagles goalkeeper, but
Jake Sweeney was there to tap in the rebound as Loyola took the 1-0 lead.
Loyola held the lead over the next six minutes, before American scored a pair of goals over a four minute period, as they took a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute.
The Greyhounds offense continued to press to find the equalizing goal, as they managed to draw a free kick just outside of the penalty box. Nichols stepped up and fired the ball low to the left, as Loyola tied the game 2-2 in the 73rd minute.
Van der Walt came up with a trio of big saves to keep the game level down the stretch, as the Greyhounds late chance at a game-winner was saved, as teams went into overtime.
Van der Walt finished the night with six saves, while Nichols had a goal and a assist on the night.
