Toomey Named To U.S. National Team Staff For Continued Role

SPARKS, Md. – Loyola University Maryland's Charley Toomey, '90, will be on the sidelines with the U.S. Men's Lacrosse National Team as the Red, White & Blue vie for another World Championship in 2027.

Toomey, who is entering his 20th year as the Greyhounds head coach, will be an assistant coach for the second-straight cycle after helping the United States win gold at the 2023 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships in San Diego.

He is joined on the sideline by three other collegiate head coaches, Hofstra's Seth Tierney, Georgetown's Kevin Warne and Providence's Bobby Benson. Toomey and the staff will guide the National Team throughout the next four years during the selection process and continue through the 2027 World Championships in Japan.

Toomey is the set the Loyola school record for men's lacrosse coaching victories in a career last season, surpassing his college head coach, Dave Cottle (181-70). Toomey has a 184-101 record through 18 seasons with the Greyhounds.

His roots to Loyola grew long before being named the Greyhounds' head coach prior to the 2006 season. Toomey was an assistant coach at Loyola for nine years – with other stops at the U.S. Naval Academy as an assistant and as a head coach at Severn School and the Naval Academy Prep School – prior to moving into the head coaching role.

He first came to the Loyola campus as a student-athlete in 1986 and was a goalkeeper for the Greyhounds from 1987-90. Toomey was a two-time All-American in goal for the Greyhounds and helped lead Loyola to the 1990 NCAA Championship Game.

As a head coach, Toomey has coached 53 USILA All-Americans, 100 all-conference selections, 21 conference positional or players or rookies of the year, a Tewaaraton Award winner and five finalists and 38 USILA Scholar All-Americans.

Toomey was first appointed to the U.S. National Team coaching staff in 2019 with Head Coach John Danowski. Toomey worked with the U.S. goalkeepers, defense and faceoff unit as it outscored opponents 86-32 in in seven games at the World Championships.
