Quick Hits

  • Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse returns to Ridley Athletic Complex on Saturday, April 4, for a 12 noon game against Boston University that will be the first of a Greyhounds doubleheader. The game precedes a Loyola-Boston College women's lacrosse game at 3 p.m.
  • Mason Cook has scored three or more goals in nine of Loyola's 10 games thus far in 2026. The nine hat tricks give him 11 in his career, all of which have come in the last 14 games (dating back to 2025).
  • Loyola's starting attack – Cook, Kenan Everhart and Matthew Minicus – has combined for 65.8 percent of the Greyhounds goals this year (75 of 114).
  • The Greyhounds are second the Patriot League, and 14th in the nation, in fewest turnovers per game (14.5) this season.
  • Charley Toomey is in his 21st season as head coach of the Greyhounds. It is also his 30th year as a member of the Loyola staff and 34th with the program, including four as a student-athlete.
  • The Greyhounds are in their 17th season of competition at Ridley Athletic Complex, which opened in 2010. The Greyhounds are 78-37 (.678) all-time at the stadium.

Looking Back

  • Holy Cross scored with 9:11 left in regulation, tying Saturday's Patriot League game at 8-8, but Loyola held the Crusaders' scoreless for the remainder of the game, and the Greyhounds scored the last two goals for a 10-8 road victory.
  • Owen Tunney's goal knotted the game at 8-8 five minutes, 49 seconds into the third quarter, capping a 5-2 Holy Cross run that spanned from late in the second quarter until that goal.
  • From that point, the Greyhounds caused four Holy Cross turnovers, and Max Watkins had four of his 15 saves on eight Crusaders shots.
  • Matthew Minicus, who had four points on two goals and two assists came up with what would be the eventual game-winning goal off of a Holy Cross clear.
  • Mason Cook had a game-high four goals and an assist, while Kenan Everhart and Minicus each had four points. Everhart recorded a hat trick and an assist, while Minicus scored twice and assisted on a pair.
  • Watkinson finished one off his season-high with 15 saves in goal, while Joe Houlihan (4) and Jake Wilson (3) combined for seven caused turnovers.

Series History

  • Loyola and Boston University will meet for the 13th time in series history since the schools joined the Patriot League at the same time in 2013-14. The Terriers have won five of the last seven meetings, and the series is now tied at 6-6.
  • In last year's game in Boston, the Terriers used a 7-0 run between the second and third quarters to turn a 3-1 advantage into a 10-1 lead at Nickerson Field, and Boston University went on to a 13-7 Patriot League victory.
  • Kenan Everhart put Loyola on the scoreboard at 12:29 in the second quarter with an unassisted goal, dodging to score after a long outlet from Max Watkinson, but Jimmy O'Connell scored his third of the half at 9;29, and the Terriers opened the run.
  • Boston University led 7-1 at halftime and then it scored three more to go up 10-1 on a Timthy Shannehan goal with 3:35 left in the third.

New Member Of The Club

  • Matthew Minicus became the 15th player in program history to score 100 goals in a career when he tallied what would become the eventual game-winner against Bucknell.

About The Attack

  • Loyola is one of nine teams in NCAA Division I to have three players ranked in the top 100 individually in points per game: Mason Cook (T-19th, 4.40), Kenan Everhart (T-37th, 3.80), Matthew Minicus (T-93rd, 3.10).
  • That group has combined for 22 multi-goal games individually this season.
  • Mason Cook has scored 54 goals in 23 career games and reached the 50-goal mark in his 22nd outing. Kevin Lindley, the school's all-time record holder in goals scored (196) and the fastest to get to the half-century mark, got to 50 in his 20th game; Gary Hanley, who scored 151 and is second all-time, hit 50 in his 24th game.
  • Loyola has two players ranked in the top-40 nationally in extra-man goals. Mason Cook is tied for 15th with four, while Will McCulloch has scored all three of his goals this season on man-up and is tied for 36th.

Cook-ing On Attack

  • Mason Cook missed the 2025 season's fall practice with an injury, but he got up to speed in his first season at Loyola. He saw an increased role on offense over the Greyhounds' last eight games, making his first collegiate start against Providence on March 8 and nailing down a spot in the opening 10 since.
  • Cook exploded for 10 points on five goals and five assists against Holy Cross and scored two more against Navy to bring his season totals to 17 goals, seven assists and 24 points. He is the only freshman in NCAA Division I to post 10 points in a game last year, and he is the first Loyola freshman to do so since Pat Spencer had five goals and five assists in the 2016 Patriot League Championship Game against Army West Point. In the last five games (since Bucknell) of the year, Cook had 12 goals and five assists, while shooting .363 (12 of 33).
  • Now a sophomore, Cook picked up where he left off with hat tricks in each of the Greyhounds' first six games of 2026. That string was broken when he had two goals and an assist against Lehigh on March 14, but he picked back up with three or more goals against Georgetown, Bucknell and Holy Cross. He now has 11 games with three or more goals over the last 14 he has played, and over the last 15 games, he's scored two or more in all but one.
  • Cook scored a career-high eight goals on February 28 at Colgate. He is the first Loyola player to score eight or more since Kevin Lindley did so against the Raiders in March 2019.
  • This year, Cook has scored 33 goals to go with seven assists in nine contests. He leads the Patriot League, and is fourth in NCAA Division I, in goals per game (3.67) and is third in points per game (4.44) in the League.

Running In The Games

  • Loyola put up at least one run of three-straight goals or more in its first nine games this year before not posting one at Holy Cross. Overall, the Greyhounds have 18 runs of three in a row through 10 games. Four of those runs were of five or more consecutive goals, the longest being a 6-0 stretch against Lehigh.

Steady Presence

  • Matthew Minicus opened the 2025 season, his junior campaign at Loyola, with a four-point effort against Georgetown, and the multi-point games continued to trend. Through the first seven games of 2026, he has 29 career multi-goal outings and 19 multi-assist performances.
  • Last year, he led Loyola with 52 points on 25 goals and 27 assists, earning All-Patriot League Second Team recognition for the second season in a row. He registered his 100th career point with a first-quarter assist against Rutgers on February 21, 2025. After he was held without a point for just the third time in his career on March 29, 2025, at Lehigh, Minicus finished 2025 with 26 points (4.8 per game) on 17 goals (3.4) and nine assists (1.8) in the last five games of 2025.
  • He broke out for seven points with a pair of goals and five assists this year at Colgate; he then scored three times with an assist against Towson and had four goals versus Providence. Minicus then scored his 100th career goal late in the game against Bucknell.
  • Over Loyola's last two against Bucknell and Holy Cross, his goals have come at opportune times with fourth-quarter tallies serving as the eventual game-winners.
  • Minicus has played in 54 career games, starting all but one, for the Greyhounds and already has 175 points with 102 goals and 73 assists. His 175 career points are most among active Patriot League players and 11th with active Division I players.
  • He moved into 13th all-time at Loyola in points against Towson and is one out of tying for 12th place, two away from tying for 10th. His 72 assists are 10th in school history. With two more goals, he'll pass Zach Herreweyers (2013-16) for 14th all-time.

Faceoffs In Five

  • Loyola has won faceoffs at a 58.3 percent clip over the last seven games, a number that goes up to 60.6 in the last four.
  • Carson Hall has taken 117 draws since the seven-game stretch started on February 28 at Colgate, winning 71, good for 60.7 percent. He has picked up 33 ground balls in those games. He went 14 of 17 on March 17 against Georgetown, totaling nine ground balls for the second time this year. Mason Graves has won 54.5 percent in the seven games (37 of 68), including going 9 of 12 against Lehigh and 13 of 17 a week later against Bucknell.
  • Miles Halter is second on the team – behind Hall – in ground balls during the seven games with 24. A backup attacker for Loyola, Halter has taken most short-stick wings on faceoffs in those seven games.

Standing Up In Starting Role

  • The 2025 season was Max Watkinson's first as a full-time starter for the Greyhounds in goal; the Baltimore native started two games in 2024 before taking over the job in 2025.
  • He posted solid numbers in 14 games with 10 or more saves in 13 of the games. Watkinson made 189 saves in 14 contests (13.5 per game), with a 55.1 saves percentage; he ranked sixth nationally in saves per game.
  • This year, in the first 10 games, Watkinson made 11 or more saves in nine, and he now has 23 games with 10 or more saves in 27 outings as a starter between the pipes. He is third in the Patriot League, and 13th nationally, in saves per game (12.8).

Coming Together

  • Kenan Everhart missed all of his freshman season (2024) with an injury, and he then missed a chunk of time in 2025, finishing the year with nine goals and seven assists.
  • This season, he eclipsed both of those totals in just five games and through 10 has 22 goals and 16 assists. He tied his to-date career-high with four goals at UMBC, and a week after went for a career-best four assists at Colgate. Three days later, he scored five times and assisted on four more in Loyola's win over Towson. He enters Saturday's game sixth in the Patriot League with 3.80 points per game; he is seventh with 1.5 assists.

Toomey's Team

  • Charley Toomey is in his 21st year as the head coach at Loyola and his 30th as a member of the Greyhounds' coaching staff. Overall, he is in his 34th year on the Evergreen campus, including his four seasons as a student-athlete from 1986-90.
  • Toomey has a 193-116 career record. Early in the 2016 season, Toomey became the second coach in program history to reach and cross the 100-win plateau; he became the school's all-time leader in wins in 2024, passing Dave Cottle's 181.
  • In January 2019, Toomey was named to the coaching staff of the U.S. Men's National Team as an assistant coach. He was an assistant for the gold-medal-winning team at the 2023 World Championships in San Diego. Toomey will again be an assistant for Team USA in preparation for and competition at the 2027 Championships in Japan.
