Baltimore – The No. 9 Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team scored four straight goals over the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth quarter, as they pulled away from No. 12 Johns Hopkins University on Wednesday evening for the 17-14 non-conference win.
Chase Boyle scored a career-high six goals, while
Anna Ruby had a career-best three assists, and
Georgia Latch and
Sydni Black each scored their third straight hat-trick.
Lauren Spence made 8 saves on the evening, to go along with three ground balls and a caused turnover. Boyle added a career-high 10 draw controls on the night.
The Blue Jays (3-1 overall) scored the first two goals of the game within the first 1:30 of the game, to take the early 2-0 lead.
Chase Boyle scored the Greyhounds (3-0 overall) first goal of the game, unassisted.
Johns Hopkins scored another goal with 4:49 remaining in the first quarter to lead 3-1. Loyola responded with two goals 20 seconds apart, one from
Avery Ruhnke, and the other coming from
Georgia Latch, as the score was tied 3-3 at half.
Loyola scored two of the first three goals in the first half, to take a early two-goal lead. The Blue Jays responded with four-straight goals, with one coming a player-up, as Loyola trailed 8-6 with 1:58 remaining. Another Boyle goal with 42 seconds left cut their deficit down to 8-7 heading into half.
The third quarter saw both defense's step up, as only a combined five goals were scored in the quarter.
Chase Boyle scored another two goals in the quarter, with both of them coming a player-up, while
Sydni Black scored, unassisted, with 1:03 remaining to tie the game 10-10 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Greyhounds started the fourth quarter fast, as they scored the first three goals of the quarter in the first 3:44 of the quarter.
Catie Corolla scored the first goal of the quarter, as Loyola was a player up, followed by another player-up goal from
Georgia Latch. Latch capped off the 4-0 Loyola run, assisted by
Sydni Black.
Ashley Mackin scored for the Blue Jays to cut their deficit down to 13-11 with 8:22. Johns Hopkins could not cut into their deficit any further, as Loyola responded with a goal of their own down the stretch, as a pair of
Sydni Black goals late in the fourth secured the 17-14 win.
Possession was even between the two teams, has draws controls were even, 17-17. Loyola held the slight edge in shots (32-29) and shots on goal (27-22) in the game.
Loyola will continue non-conference play next Saturday, as they will welcome the Penn State Nittany Lions at 12:00 PM.
