Lex Therien posted her 14
th double-double of the season on Saturday afternoon for the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team, as they used a fourth quarter run to defeat Army West Point, 55-52.
With the win, the Greyhounds secure their first winning record in the regular season since the 2010-11 season, when the Greyhounds finished 21-13 in the MAAC.
The Black Knights (12-15 overall, 9-7 Patriot League) started the fourth quarter on a 4-0 run, as they took a 47-44 lead with 7:04 remaining.
From there, Loyola's defense played big, holding Army scoreless over the next 6:30 minutes of game-time, as they went on a 8-0 run to take a 52-47 lead.
During the run, four different plays scored, highlighted by
Kelly Ratigan's big three with 3:34 remaining to extend the lead to four points.
Lauren Lithgow hit a three-pointer for Army with 34 seconds remaining to cut the deficit down to two.
On the ensuing Greyhounds (15-13 overall, 10-7 Patriot League) possession,
Ava Therien hit both free throws to retake a four-point lead.
After a Army layup, the Black Knights forced a Loyola turnover with 22 seconds remaining. As Army drove the ball, Laura Salmeron came up with a steal, before being fouled with two seconds remaining, as Loyola went on to win 55-52.
Lex Therien led the way with a game-high 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Kimmie Hicks added 10 points for Loyola on the afternoon. Laura Salmeron and
Meliah Van-Otoo had three steals each in the win, while
Ava Therien added four assists.
Lauren Lithgow was the lone Black Knight in double figures, as she had 15 points on the afternoon.
Loyola will head into their regular season finale tied for first place in the Patriot League with Boston and Holy Cross.
The Greyhounds host American on Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM in Reitz Arena.
