Sydni Black tied a career-high with 8 points in the first half, as the Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team used a big first half to hold off the No. 18 Naval Academy on Wednesday evening in a Patriot League matchup.
Sydni Black had a game-high 8 points, with five goals and three assists.
Georgia Latch added three goals and four assists for seven points on the day, while
Chase Boyle added four goals.
Regan Kielmeyer and
Anna Ruby added a goal and an assist, while
Catie Corolla had a pair of goals.
Elisa Faklaris also had a goal on the evening.
Lauren Spence had a season-high 9 saves in the win, to go along with one ground ball.
Sydni Black got the scoring started in the first half, as she showed off her speed by running past her defender for the goal.
After the Midshipmen (7-2 overall, 1-1 Patriot League) scored, the Greyhounds retook the lead, as Black found
Chase Boyle for her first of the game.
Georgia Latch got on the board with 4:34, thanks to an assist from Black, her second of the day.
Emily Messinese scored her first of the day for Navy shortly after, before
Sydni Black scored her second of the day on the free-position.
Navy added another goal before the end of the first quarter, as the Greyhounds (8-0 overall, 3-0 Patriot League) led 4-3 heading into the second quarter.
Loyola started the second half strong, as
Catie Corolla scored the first two goals of the quarter to take a 6-3 lead. Loyola continued the momentum, as
Anna Ruby scored on a player-up possession, thanks to a assist from
Georgia Latch.
After another
Chase Boyle goal on a Latch assist, Navy stopped the 5-0 Loyola run, as Messinese scored her second of the day.
The Greyhounds momentum continued, however, as
Sydni Black scored another unassisted goal, to kickstart another 5-0 run. Latch and Black followed it up with a pair of free-position goals, then
Chase Boyle scored on a low-to-low shot, assisted from Black, to make it a 12-4 game.
Black capped off her 8-point first half with another free-position goal. Kat McAteer ended the first half with a goal for Navy, as the Greyhounds led 13-5.
The Midshipmen took the momentum to start the second half, as they scored three-straight goals, including two from Messinese, to make it a five-goal game.
Chase Boyle ended the Navy run, as she scored her fourth of the day, as Loyola led 14-8 with 2:10 remaining in the third quarter.
Over the last 1:29 of game time, both teams traded goals, as Loyola took a 15-9 lead into the fourth quarter.
Navy started the quarter with a player-up goal, to cut their deficit down to five goals. Loyola responded with a pair of player-up goals, one from Latch and another from
Elisa Faklaris, as they led by 7-goals with 6:10 remaining in the game.
Navy went on to score a pair of goals over the last five minutes of game-time, but Loyola held on for the 17-12 win.
Coming into the matchup, both teams ranked in the top-five in draw control percentage. Loyola won the draw control battle with a 19-13 edge in the win.
Chase Boyle led the way for the Greyhounds, as she tallied 12 draw controls in the game.
The Greyhounds will continue Patriot League play on Saturday as they travel to play Lehigh at 12:00 PM.
