Philadelphia –
Regan Kielmeyer scored a career-high five goals on Friday afternoon for the Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team, as they pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat Duke University, 16-11, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
With the win, the Greyhounds will play the University of Penn in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, May 12, at 1:00 PM.
With seven draw controls on the afternoon,
Chase Boyle broke the Loyola and Patriot League single season draw control record, which was previously 198, set by
Jillian Wilson last season.
With the game tied heading into the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds (18-2 overall, 9-0 Patriot League) won the opening draw to begin the quarter. As she drove for a shot,
Chase Boyle was fouled, as she converted the ensuing 8-meter shot, to take a 12-11 lead.
Loyola responded quickly, as
Catie Corolla won the ensuing draw control, before Alana Wray scored just 36 seconds later, as Loyola took a two goal lead with 13:36 remaining.
Lauren Spence came up with a save on the following Blue Devils (10-9 overall) possession, as Boyle would go on to score her second goal of the game, as Loyola took a three goal lead with 11:28 remaining.
The Greyhounds defense continued to hold strong down the stretch in the fourth quarter, as
Regan Kielmeyer would add two more goals to secure the Greyhounds win.
Loyola has now won a NCAA Tournament game in five straight seasons (excluding the 2020 season).
Duke began the second half with three straight goals to begin the second half, as they took a 8-7 lead in the third quarter.
Loyola responded with back-to-back goals from Boyle and
Anna Ruby, as they retook the lead. After another Duke goal, Loyola scored consecutive goals again, as they led 11-9 with 3:19 remaining in the quarter.
Duke closed out the third quarter with a pair of goals, as the game was tied at 11 entering the fourth quarter.
Kielmeyer led the Greyhounds with five goals, for her first career hat-trick.
Chase Boyle and
Catie Corolla had three goals each, while
Georgia Latch had a pair of goals.
Sydni Black added a goal and two assists on the afternoon.
Duke opened the game to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, before Loyola scored three of the last four goals in the quarter, to tie the game at four goals each at the end of one.
The Greyhounds, thanks to goals from Latch, Corolla, and Kielmeyer, outscored Duke 3-1 in the second quarter, as they led 7-5 at halftime.
Loyola controlled the possession, as they won 19-11 on draw controls, including seven draws from
Chase Boyle and five from
Sydni Black.
Boyle added a team-high two ground balls and two caused turnovers on the afternoon.
