Hunington, WV --
Sean McEvoy scored in the first minute for the Loyola University Maryland men's soccer team on Monday afternoon, but Marshall University responded with six unanswered goals in non-conference play.
The Greyhounds (0-2-1 overall) started the game as the aggressors, as right after kick off, the Loyola front line pressed the Thundering Herd's (2-1 overall) goalkeeper and forced a errant clear attempt.
Sean McEvoy controlled the failed clear, before shooting the ball from well outside the penalty box, as he found the back of the net as Loyola took the early 1-0 lead.
Six minutes later, Loyola had a chance to add on to it's lead, as
Charlie Herley had a breakaway, but his shot was saved by Marshall as Loyola held onto the 1-0 lead.
In the 15th minute, Marshall was awarded a penalty kick off of a questionable handball call inside of the penalty box. The Thundering Herd capitalized on the penalty kick, as the shot was just out of the reach of the diving
Dylan Van der Walt.
Just one minute later, Marshall scored a second goal, this one coming off of a unlucky deflection off of a Loyola defender.
With ten minutes remaining in the half, Marshall scored their third goal of the game, as a Marshall shot was deflected up in the air in the penalty box, as another Marshall player snuck in to tap in the goal. Marshall would add another goal in the first half, as Loyola trailed 4-1 at halftime.
In the second half, the Greyhounds defense anchored in against the Marshall attack, as they held the Thundering Herd off of the scoreboard for the majority of the half.
Marshall would score two more goals in the last 10 minutes of game time, as Loyola fell to No. 2 Marshall, 6-1.
Sean McEvoy scored his first goal of the season, as Van der Walt recorded 5 saves on the day.
Loyola will be back in action on Friday, as they will host Saint Joseph's at 7:00 PM.
